Pardon my intrusion into the Metta 8 forum, but I saw something that's little a bit positive about Mormons so I figured he hadn't posted it yet. If he has already posted this I'll be happy to delete this post.

Oh the LDS are definitely becoming more gay-friendly.

Even their Jesus is starting to look like a gym bunny.

I'm afraid I'm fairly skeptical when it comes to LDS people being suddenly nicer to groups of people they've been hostile or indifferent to. I'm reminded of how one day, Mormon leader Spencer Kimball called the flock together claiming he'd experienced a revelation: Blacks were now (suddenly) welcome in his church. (One step ahead of an indictment?) Now we hear that the LDS church might start to be nice to gays. To me, it's either a public relations move, or a way to bring in a few more dollars by way of a few gay memberships. You know they want 10% off the gross don't you? You're not getting away with just 10% off your net with this fine group. I'd pass and give them a wide berth.

I've known a good number of LDS people, and I admired their clean living, healthy lifestyles. They were honest, and worked hard - and were terrific people - each of them. They shared their religion with me, and politely tried to urge me to join their church. While I was thinking about it, and still in conversation with them - all was well. They couldn't have been nicer. When it came time for me to tell them I was going to stay with the Episcopal church and not come over and become a Mormon - all the niceness ended abruptly with a "Fuck You" right to my face. We never spoke again. So yes, they can be a very nice group - - while there is a chance on recruiting you.

No question ... they have much work to do. However, on an individual basis, every last Mormon that I've had the pleasure of working with or knowing have been fine, hard working, honest folks.

Mormon is a cult combining superstition and social welfare. Sociopaths disguised as normal people. Don't be deceived. They are after your money.

In the words of Thomas Jefferson (America Founder): "There is not one redeeming feature in our superstition of Christianity. It has made one half the world fools, and the other half hypocrites" (quoted by newspaper columnist William Edelen, "Politics and Religious Illiteracy," Truth Seeker, Vol. 121, No. 3, p. 33).

I'm sorry but this is total bullshit. This family worked hard at ensuring Prop 8 passed denying many Californian the chance to build relationships equal to str8s and they could have cared less what it did to the gay community. They continued the Mormon tradition of beating and bullying gays and preaching how hated they are UNTIL….

suddenly they have a gay little kid of their own. Suddenly it's not all that bad, suddenly I guess God has given them something special, suddenly it's not a choice but their little spirit baby is special. Nope, they can't just pick up and start embracing their new founded love for homosexuals. They damaged a lot of people in their work, I'm NOT giving them a free pass! Just another indication of how f#$ked up that religion is!

"Nope, they can't just pick up and start embracing their new founded love for homosexuals."

So a better choice would be that they keep on hating?

We're not sure that it's right to deny anyone the right to enlightenment. Depending on their level of contrition for their prior acts of aggression, we should assess the extent of their current enlightenment. If a gay son has brought them into the light (the rainbow?), then we'd welcome them. But in the spirit, if not the letter, of eb925guy's objection, caution is warranted.

Let's remember also that the LDS has reversed its position previously (to wit on non-Caucasians), so any proponents, particularly from within their ranks, is a positive step toward change, however long it takes.

Also, on the subject of velocity of change,

The problem is not once did they ever allude to or apologize for the way they treated the gay community. Sure it's great that they've 'seen the light' but they would never have done that if it hadn't been for their son. And now they feel as though they're pioneers of gay preaching? Pleassssse!

Yes, I suppose it's good that they are NOW preaching a new gospel but I think it would have been much more palatable had they addressed the gay community to show their remorse for adhering to something that contributed to a lot of damage for a lot of loving people and accepted accountability for their role in it all.

Gay Mormons I have known were completely ostracized by their families, at the instruction of their church leaders. The church did everything possible to punish any gay person who dared to acknowledge his identity.

Yes, the church should be encouraged to change and we should celebrate when they do. Do Not Trust; Only Verify.

Slow, but it is change, maybe one person at a time.
