I was listening to a very reputable fitness podcast the other day and they said that squatting can increase your core girth or waistline thickness.

They suggested doing leg presses, extensions, curls, and etc for legs if you want to keep your waistline from thickening and getting wider. What do you guys think?

whether that is true or not I can't say. If it were true I would still continue to do squats. They are such an important exercise that EVERYONE should be doing. Im sure the pros out weight the cons in total!

I wonder if it's because you're using your core muscles to balance yourself from falling over?

I am increasingly having to wear pants with a waist size of 35 - but for my ass and thighs, not my waistline. I love having to pull in my belt more because my waistline itself is NOT 35. I squat 405 on my last set (not to mention the other leg work) and love showing off the hard work. icon_wink.gif

I've been doing squats since forever, well 6 months and a bit, and I still wear size 28 jeans.

I'm guessing that if squats increase your waist you'd definately see a difference in the first few months.

Yeah, I think the only thing that increases your waistline is Mc-a-Dees and similar. icon_wink.gif

Squats DO increase your waistline. But they DON'T make you look fat. I had a 28'' waist a year ago, now it's 32'', but I don't look fat.

What happens is your core muscles get much stronger and thicker, and it'll also give you a nice, muscular ass to go with it. Squats also give you that characteristic shape to your quads that you can't get through any other exercise. Combined with leg presses, you can gain lean muscle at an incredible rate, and where your legs comprise 2/3 of your lean muscle mass, they should not be blown off.

Working your abs will also give you a larger waistline, as will exercising ANY core muscle group. Don't sweat the size, it's about how you look icon_wink.gif

Just do exercises to reduce your waistline as well and you'll be fine.

I find that when I do my squats while eating fried chicken my waist gets bigger - but pizza is worse.

Because a lot of gay guys think anything over 28'' is morbidly obese LOL!

The only way you see a muscular model have a 28'' waist is if they either have a) a tiny frame or b) they took a diuretic for the past several weeks, shot some water up their butt to flush out all the poop, then smeared some Preparation H on their abs to tighten up before the show.

Really tho ... that statement that squats make your waistline wider doesn't make physiologic sense
