"The perpetuation of the AIDS epidemic among a new generation of young gay men is anathema, made all the worse by the fact that a subset of these men remain undiagnosed and that among those diagnosed only some 20 percent adhere to their treatments such that their virus is reduced to undetectable levels. How can this be?"

"Clinical director of Sexual Health Brian Hughes says in recent years there has been an increase in HIV diagnoses across Australia, together with a decrease in the frequency of HIV testing."

Maybe they think being "close" to a cure; is a good enough reason to return to taking the time and life they have for granted? Not they ever considered that the cure could be found the days after they die from their stupidity; or that they could possibly even be allergic to the cure.

I have a friend who has LOTS of sex (not sure if always protected) who writes off HIV/AIDS with "eh, they're close to a cure anyway". No idea how to get through to him.

Close to a cure? That is not a license to engage in reckless sex. Promote awareness of HIV and AIDs. It is treatable but prevention is better than cure. Promote safer sex. When we reduce HIV rates it shows we are vigilant and it shows we become responsible for our actions.

In my experience, it just seems to be primarily that men complain about sex not feeling as good using condoms as opposed to barebacking. Moreso with my generation anyway. That's no excuse anyway, I always demand condoms.

"LONDON, Nov 4 (Reuters) - HIV epidemics are becoming more concentrated in marginalised groups such as sex workers, drug users and gay men, and could defy global attempts to combat AIDS if attitudes do not change, a U.N. expert said."

Keep barebacking and gay men will be more marginalized. The irony.

"Nov. 18, 2013 — Human-Immunodeficiency Viruses that resist AIDS medicines are primarily transmitted by people who are not actually undergoing treatment. In order to prevent a spread of the resistant viruses increased efforts in prevention and early diagnosis of new infections are needed, as concluded by the Swiss HIV Cohort Study that is supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF). In their molecular epidemiological analysis of 1674 male carriers of HIV who had sex with other men, the researchers demonstrated resistant viruses in 140 patients. The research group reconstructed the transmission chains of these viruses on the basis of the patients' estimated infection dates and the degree of genetic relatedness of their blood-borne viruses. Most of the transmission chains commence in HIV carriers who were not yet undergoing treatment at the time at which the resistant viruses were transmitted."

    GET TESTED.
    USE CONDOMS
    PREVENT HIV
