I'm still looking for a gym in Rhode Island that I like... any RI guys out there know of gyms with open showers? Not that I mind them, I just would like to know what I'm getting in to.

    Thanks.

You'll have to find a real old gym for that

I'm not from RI, but in other parts of the US gang showers are more common in YMCAs. In fact, I've never known a Y to have separate cubicles, but then of course I haven't used them everywhere. When a Y I used was renovated to add an additional mens shower room in 2006 they still made it the older gang style.

So you might look into your area Ys, and most of them will give you a tour before you sign a membership, to include the locker room facilities. And also check out the separate mens health club if they have one, which can have different (and better) locker room facilties, with added features like sauna & steam room, for an added fee. The Y may also give you a few complimentary day passes to let you actually use the facility before deciding.

I'm old enough to have used indoor swimming pools at the Y, high school, college and in the US Army where not only was the shower a big open room (gang shower), but it opened directly onto the pool deck, sometimes a wide-open portal with no doors at all. Because you swam nude, too, and it was designed so that the only way into the pool area was through the shower.

Popular in college locker rooms was the tower or column/pole shower head, which could accommodate more guys in the same space compared to having shower heads along the walls. This was useful to quickly handle the rush between phy-ed classes, or when entire teams ended practice.

Not only were you packed tightly in there all naked, but from 4 to 6 guys were facing each other in a circle, giving full frontals. There was no turning towards the wall, because no matter which way you turned you were facing somebody, in the middle of the floor.

What I disliked about them was that soapy (and presumably also dirty) water from guys around you would be splashing onto you, you were really standing that close when the showers were in heavy use. You'd get another guy's splash even as you were finished and walking out, like threading through a subway car, only wet & naked.

apparently the trend started in high schools some 20 years ago but there are still supporters of the open shower, too bad, we always had mandatory shower after PE class, now some schools don't even have PE class, I had my own embarrassing moment in the high school gang shower, I was underdeveloped for my age, but I would never condone or complain getting rid of them due to my own modesty, they were part of life growing up, being ok with ones bodies is what you were taught by your PE teacher. I think 'potential lawsuits' and the excuse of school budget cuts got in the way,

this may explain why anyone currently 40 and over are the ones that still support gang showers, would try a nude beach, clothing optional resort or walk around naked in a locker room, graduating classes of pre 1990, the last generation to remember experiencing this communal, non issue

To OP, due to this change in modesty, you probably are not going to find your showers, you can blame the current 30 somethings for the change, they are the ones who complained about modesty

see Art, the young ones don't even know that "see things" in the shower was once NORMAL and a non issue
current 30 somethings made modesty an issue

The same "things" that all men have, that the male observers themselves have. That's why they were nothing special or remarkable.

At least that was the logic that was drilled into us as kids over 50 years ago, and I presume long before that. "What are you shy about?" adult camp counselors and gym & swim coaches would bark at us. "We're all built the same way! What are you, girls?"

And indeed we were all males, although sometimes it took a bit of relearning from what our parents had taught us about modesty, that kept us from running around the house naked when there were guests, or in other public settings. The new rule was: nudity was only shameful when females could see you; otherwise it didn't matter. Most boys adjusted to that. I don't know what boys think today, or what they're told.

It's so disappointing that today's gay men are such prudes.

I think in today's age- Modesty, is quite an anomaly, and quite rare to find in today's gay men.

If I chose to be concealed within a shower curtain and that views me as being a prude- so be it.

I've heard that the younger generation has gotten more conservative about sexuality... Look at the reaction to Miley Cyrus. No one would've batted an eye ten years ago.

I prefer to shower in private and in a stall, it just feels more comfortable to me, and I'm far from a prude.

This still seems to be a topic that only gay men seem to really care about. and then we want to be offended when guys (especially straight guys) make fun of us saying we're desperate to see dick and asses lol

As for the OP. My college and certain others still have open showers, although most would require facing the wall.

Open showers (gang style) are still used in lots of places everywhere you go. Many universities world wide use them. Any guy who is shy or bashful and refuses to use these showers needs to get involved with team sports and hang around MEN. Your whole team works out, and showers up. Guys laugh, talk and think NOTHING of showering together. No towel dance bull back at the lockers either. It just doesn't ever happen. When did some guys become such pansies? I sure don't see them anywhere I go.

the problem is a combination of the pussification of being raised as the only boy by a single mother (women have notorious body issues they project on everyone), and muslim culture at universities who generaly also have issues with nudity. add to that the fact that 90% of the population is fat, and you get a perfect storm for pansies who cant take it off and be normal in the shower like real men. there is also now a lack of the effect of WWII vets being in charge where gang showers would be the norm, and anything to the contrary would be for pussies. in addition to being too expensive.

cell phone cameras were pretty much the deathblow though.
