Should I use face mask before or after shaving?

I would like to try using facial mask before heading out to important social and family functions. I wet shave my throat area and around my jawline before styling my beard with clippers. Before I wet shave I exfoliate because it makes wet shaving more pleasant and easy. My dad was the one who suggested I use face mask and it works for him, but he doesn't shave, he grooms his beard with clippers, so he couldn't give me an answer when I asked him is it better to use a mask before or after shaving.

Can you guys please help me and state the reasons? =)

Putting chemicals on your skin is not a good thing. Shaving irritates the skin. Putting a face mask on after shaving could increase the irritation. Your face and throat are not a place you want breaking out in a rash or whatever so treat them kindly.
