I sent the station the following e-mail:

    http://www.kctv5.com/story/23784990/anti-gay-customers-refuse-tip-to-server-other-patrons-rally-around-him

Thank you for covering the anti-gay incident where the waiter was not tipped! I am sure your coverage has helped many to respond in a positive way to a dreadful example of homophobia. But may I raise several points?

You begin by say this is a "controversy." It's not - it's an example of raw bigotry and ignorance.

You refer to the waiter's "gay lifestyle." Being gay is no more a "lifestyle" than being heterosexual. it is a life, lived by someone who happens to be gay.

You refer to the pastor's "homosexual partner." This puts the emphasis, in most minds, on sex, not partnership, and it detracts, in most minds, from the very good, Christian things he says.

Again, thank you for your coverage, which has gone national. But please try to cover incidents which effect gay persons as incidents - not as gay.

It's very peculiar, though very common in the present epoch(and also sad to see), how many people claim themselves as 'Christians' and yet not even a single fragment of their thoughts and principles are Christ like!

The homophobic couple who refused to tip their server and left the note were not Christian. They never claimed to be Christian, but more importantly, truly Christian people embrace love, tolerance and acceptance of all people. That's what Jesus Christ professed. Anyone treating gay people poorly is simply not following Christ's teachings and is not really Christian.

So a church group performs an anti-gay ministry just to talk about who God serves and doesn't serve? If they were really Godly, they'd either of given unto Caesar or ask for a different waiter from the beginning. Low-lifes, can't even presume to speak for God Almighty in their own mind, without sounding so undignified. icon_rolleyes.gificon_rolleyes.gificon_rolleyes.gif

In the words of Thomas Jefferson (America Founder): "There is not one redeeming feature in our superstition of Christianity. It has made one half the world fools, and the other half hypocrites" (quoted by newspaper columnist William Edelen, "Politics and Religious Illiteracy," Truth Seeker, Vol. 121, No. 3, p. 33).

Just saw that on Queerty. Pisses me off just how they probably thought what they did was "mannered", and now they can get away with it icon_evil.gif

Next time I hope they stay and have a Lafayette as their waiter

I've never experienced this as a server, but I'm happy to no longer live off of tips. The worst tippers were Indian families who migrated here and the most picky, middle Americans from the bible belt areas, and canadians!

Perhaps bad tipping by Indians is a throwback to British rule in India. We British tend to be poor tippers too, but that is partly due to cultural differences, in that British waiters and waitresses tend to be paid at least minimum wage, rather than being reliant on tips.

I don't care. Learn about countries customs and etiquette before you travel.

No, you're right. I wasn't trying to excuse it, just explaining.

Just a FYI, the Indian immigrants I'm talking about have lived in the US for years so I'm pretty sure they are aware of the customs.

I heard all about it. I was actually in Lenexa and OP yesterday with clients and thought about stopping by the restaurant in question.. I know right where it is.

Ridiculous bigots... you'd think they'd learn.

    +1
The Gaily Grind's purpose is to create controversy by misrepresentation and to reinforce gay stereotypes.

I've eaten at that very restaurant. I am willing to support the server but I just couldn't suffer through another meal from that place. I'm sure the offending customers thought it was fine dining.

Same here! I always tip 20% if the service is good. I was doing this the last time I was in London, and didn't realize it wasn't the norm until my cousin pointed it. lol

It was covered by local media. I do think it is interesting how public sentiment has shifted in recent years. I think most people just don't care (and shouldn't) so long as the guy does his job in the best way he can.

Next time these religious lunatics visit the restaurant and have the same gay waiter, hopefully the waiter will just give them slow, shitty service as retaliation.
