UK Review: Shale gas fracking a low risk to public health

It's kind of odd how often the same people who want governments to defer to the "science" would rather use the precautionary principle when it comes to fracking and gm foods.

    http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/10/31/us-britain-health-fracking-idUSBRE99U0KX20131031

The risks to public health from emissions caused by fracking for shale oil and gas are low as long as operations are properly run and regulated, the British government's health agency said on Thursday.

Public Health England (PHE) said in a review that any health impacts were likely to be minimal from hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, which involves the pumping of water and chemicals into dense shale formations deep underground.

Environmental campaigners have staged large anti-fracking protests in Britain, arguing that it can pollute groundwater and cause earthquakes.

Since there is currently no fracking in Britain, the PHE report examined evidence from countries such as the United States, where it found that any risk to health was typically due to operational failure.

"The currently available evidence indicates that the potential risks to public health from exposure to emissions associated with the shale gas extraction process are low if operations are properly run and regulated," said John Harrison, director of PHE's center for radiation, chemical and environmental hazards.

We should gut the planet until it caves in on itself! Think of all the money!!!

That's your rationale? Why are you anti-science? Do you also believe in overpopulation?

Yes, do you believe in manmade climate change?

Do you believe radioactive sites like Chernobyl are a good place to raise a family?

I think there's a good chance climate change is manmade - but I also think that climate always changes so it's better to deal with it rather than reverse it. So, do you believe in overpopulation?

I fail to see what Chernobyl has to do with anything.

I just find your scientific claims dubious, considering on another thread you were trying to say nuclear meltdowns aren't dangerous.

Overpopulation has stripped the planet of natural resources. If we could find a sustainable way to carry on, it wouldn't be problematic. But not one single country has succeeded in that.

Did I say that nuclear meltdowns aren't dangerous? Are you also illiterate? Please do quote where I said meltdowns are not dangerous.

It's really too bad you don't actually rely on science for your claims. If overpopulation is such an issue how do you think the world should deal with the problem?

Chernobyl is an interesting place in that nowadays it has a remarkable level of biodiversity now that humans leave it totally untouched (I'm not saying I would raise a family there!)

If you meant "made stuff up" by the words "connecting all the dots" - you're right - you certainly did. So now that you've been caught with your pants down, how would you deal with your perceived problem of overpopulation?

Proof? I'm really sorry you're too stupid to actually understand what I write - oh wait, no, I'm not sorry. I am however sorry you are too bigoted to understand the perspectives of others or well, science. But no response on the issue of overpopulation?

So do you think emissions should be curbed through legislation, or should we just throw caution (and poisonous gas) to the wind?

I think that's the long range plan, that and pollute the air and see which one kills us first.

Mine is to educate people about condoms and the joy of gay sex so they don't procreate but rather celebrate the diversity we already have.icon_biggrin.gif

And what is your solution to the pollution caused by fracking?

As I have noted repeatedly, I believe that natural gas is likely to be the bridge energy source towards something a lot cleaner - but also a lot closer to free - either nuclear or solar.

Fracking is considerably less polluting than its counterparts, it's safer than most forms of energy and it's causing a massive abundance of natural gas. The US is now a lot closer to energy independence which means less need to have supertankers ship oil from half way around the world, funding tyrants and dictators who literally hate freedom. Why do you hate fracking so much as to ignore the science?

leatherblond saidThis study came out of the UK? I would have thought they would have been anti-fracking and found a way to paint fracking in a bad light.

The parliament and the people who live in the areas they want to drill don't see eye to eye. Imagine that.

Riddler78, Joe is here as a Republican plant made to make Democrats look like morons. In fact, just last week he declared that the Obamacare individual mandate "had been cut by the tea party!"

Somehow, I missed that important development on the news, and when asked by myself and several others here to provide evidence, all Joe does is go into clown antics.

Best that you just leave him here to his mission, which is to make Democrats appear to be total idiots.

    What are you babbling about?

Riddler78 Since there is currently no fracking in Britain, the PHE report examined evidence from countries such as the United States, where it found that any risk to health was typically due to operational failure.

So that's where SB has been getting his drinking water. All the paranoia and delusions of grandeur are a side effect of toxicity. That explains a lot!
