Hey guys, my friends and family always call me a stereotypical gay guy, usually for jokes. They say because I love fashion, singing, love stories etc. That its what a gay guy suppose to represent, but being aroung the gay scene last year, i seemed like the odd ball, there was uber bitchiness, drugs, prostitution, nothing Im familiar with so may I ask, is both sides on the same coin? Are the very cheery gayness on the same stereotype of its dark side?

If you like musicals and/or prostitution you're obviously a homosexual. Straight people don't participate in gaiety or debauchery.

Stereotypes are just lazy ways of thinking about things. Yeah, of course there is *some* truth in them along with a ton of exceptions but who wants to take the time to think deeply about anything? I'm too busy texting on my iPhone about total bullshit, and sending pics of my hard dick to hot young guys, to THINK or even care to. In other words, or what the fuck ever. People are intellectually lazy and like to put other people in categorical boxes that may bare little resemblance to an actual human being with all their nuances and complexities.

Stereotypical is whatever the majority is exposed to in society. Media, especially TV, tend to chose the 'over the top' gays, along with cross dressers, tranys and the like. This has become the stereotypical gay and what goes with that is whatever is portrayed in the media event, usually sex, drugs, prostitution, etc.

Chances are slim you'll find a media event that shows a gay couple raising kids, with laundry, dinner time and homework….boring….but that's life of many gays, just as it's the life of many str8s.

Just saying, Im not flamboyant, I just like what I like. Also, I think straight people most likely prostitute (well majority of women) and their clients (straight men). There might be some truth in stereotypes, but most homosexual men Ive met arent into the "gay" lifestyle, there just regular, no hypermasculinity or anything just normal. I still don't understand the hypermasculinity nor hyperfemininity....

Im just saying that transexuals, women and gay men prostitute, maybe some straight men as well, not saying the majority of any group does it, just saying that it shouldnt be in a gay stereotype...

The problem is stereotypes, but they will forever live in humanity so cant help it much, just was making a topic of discussion based on others views on the subject.

Prostitution is only a gay stereotype in countries where it's illegal to be gay.

How is " slutty club drug consumer " a stereotype when pretty much 80% of all youth between 18 and 20 , at least in the US, meet this criteria?

Well, I don't know, maybe it is being my crotchety old age or whatever, but I just don't worry overly much about what other people in general 'think' because I know damn well they don't seriously think about much of anything. I get it, it is annoying and in certain circumstances can get downright brutal if not lethal. But the problem is what to do about it? You can pass laws regarding how people treat one another in certain circumstances and that's all fine and good but you can't stop people from being assholes or worse.

One lesson I've learned in life: You can't change people. We do we'll to change ourselves and if anyone else is going to change its because they decided to for their own reasons. The best thing we can do is try and set a good example by being the best of ourselves as much of the time as we can, which is never going to be all the time. Or, to put it another way, the world would be a MUCH better place if we all just minded our own damn business and let other good people do the same. ETA: Not that I expect anyone ever will icon_sad.gif

You can't be a stereotype if you're the majority. Duh!

Don't ever apologize for your likes or dislikes. If the label "stereotypical" annoys you, maybe you can start displaying another stereotype immediately: "sexcrazed slut". Become touchy-feelie with your friends or start dryhumping them. They will change the topic of the convo faster than you can protest the stereotyping.

It's weird how the stereotype of a gay guy is an ESFP or ESFJ whereas an INTJ is actually the most likely type to be gay i.e. almost the exact opposite personality to the stereotype. If you don't follow MBTI this post meant nothing to you of course icon_biggrin.gif

I don't think any types are likely to be gay. I think the feeler types are likely to make known they're gay. They express how their feelings through clothing.

The thinker types are a bit harder to read though they give themselves away just as easily from their insecurities. Or they'll ask a question and say gay comments

It'll be like," Man, I'll take this test, I just wanna avoid all the gay question. I don't want to deal with gay shit."

Another example would be, "He has abs of steel." I said that in art class and everyone said I was gay. There was a girl who would always try to figure me out.
