TORONTO, Nov. 28 (UPI) -- Gay men who are not considered sexually desirable are more likely to engage in risky sexual behavior, Canadians researchers have found.

Researchers at the University of Toronto say homosexual men may also develop psychological problems as a consequence of feeling undesirable.

Adam Isaiah Green interviewed dozens of gay men in Toronto to determine what qualities made some men more sexually desirable than others, and what the consequences of being undesirable might be on mental and physical health.

"I found that young, white, middle-class men are considered much more sexually desirable than men who are racial minorities, over 40 and poor," Green said in a statement. "I also learned that for gay men, being considered sexually undesirable can have serious health consequences, ranging from psychological issues to risky sexual behavior."

The study, published in the Journal of Health and Social Behavior, found that undesirable gay men face stigmatization, avoidance and outright rejection, which can lead to depression, anxiety and alcohol abuse. It also highlighted cases whereby undesirable gay men will forgo safe-sex discussion and, in some cases, condom use, in the context of sex with a more attractive partner.

Oh Brother ... and who pray tell did the "you're desirable and you're not" decision making for this study?

if this was true then why is it that a lot of this big attractive guys have HIV

why do this boyish model twinks have HIV

Wrapping it up is a choice, if you are two ugly fucks, that's your choice to use not use. If you are two hot fucks, once again its your choice to use a condom or not.

oh and we all have grown up seeing ads of really built men, so some of us want to be that way. In a gay ad or anything the guys that are hot always have a six pack. If ads, and main stream decides what is hot, thats that in the world.

str8, gay, whatever, we are groomed to know what is desirable.
its up to you to find what you like and not give in to what is ideal in the eyes of mainstream

Well, duh. Anyone notice the explosion of bareback porn videos online? And how the guys in those vids generally are among the ugliest mofos to walk the earth? I can't help but think risky behavior and insecurity might be linked.

Oh, jeez...I just realized how much I sound like a certain newly-returned poster there. icon_eek.gif

don't worry zdrew... the truth doesn't have to be pretty to be true.

if someone has a horrible self-esteem and/or is deprived of affection/sex it makes sense that standards might drop. depression + desperation = risk. why does that seem far-fetched?

I would wonder if this was ever done for straights, their sexual diseases and psychological problems, which are numerous to say the least!

Did he really need a study to find this out?

"interviewed dozens of gay men in Toronto"

Sounds like another one of those statistically rock solid studies to me. icon_rolleyes.gif

I'll grant you two out of three, the old and poor part. But I don't think racial minorities are inherently unattractive and I don't think most people believe that.

Personally, I've always had a thing for Asians and Latinos. And I don't think that's all that uncommon.

Now it's time for the old fogies' opinion...

We lived through the AIDS crisis of the 80s and it was the gorgeous guys that went first. They had easy access to lots of sex. Those of us less desirable had a hard time getting laid when all those Adonises were available.

That said, times have changed, there are fewer of those magnificent specimens around simply because the boomers have grown older and the upcoming generations are less in numbers. We can certainly see and understand that those less 'desirable' are taking more chances, as in an age where unsafe sex is harder to come by, those offering it are going to be sought after - by some.

We disagree that it's a matter of visible minority though, as there are plenty of less-than-gorgeous white guys out there. In fact, because there are more white guys, the number of white not-so-great looking guys will be proportionately larger!

I only know a few guys that have HIV. None were my type, but I think they would rate as fair to good looking. Also, all the guys I've seen on RJ who identified as HIV+ have been smoking hot. So I personally can't relate to the premise.

I personally think that risky behaviors are more likely to be conducted by drunk men. I think undesirable men have a much larger population of guys to screw if they have the mindset that they want to screw someone as good looking or better.

i'm just shocked they needed to do a study to show that old, fat, ugly, poor people are sexually undesirable to most, and therefor experience rejection more often- and that this can lead to feelings of insecurity, depression, and desperate (risky) sexual behavior. DUH!
i seriously hope that no money, and minimal time was wasted on this ponderous venture into the murk of gay culture lol

    Quoted for truth.

I saw this 'study' discussed elsewhere. Many here seem to be latching on to the people who they know who have HIV and how they fit/don't fit 'perceptions'...but risky behavior, as many of us know, doesn't = HIV+ or even HIV-. It means engaging in behavior that could lead to that....or gonorrhea, herpes, HPV, syphilis, etc.

I would definitely say people with low self-esteem (inlcuding those that find themselves undesirable) have a lower self-respect, hence they would participate in risky behavior. I know that I wasn't the smartest when I didn't think anyone would want me. I let some guy, at age 14, use me for three months, condom free, and he barely even talked to me. I knew what safe sex was and had no barrier in getting protection. I just wanted someone to love me and didn't know what love was at the time. He wanted me that way, and I gave it to him. I feel very lucky we were young and had limited experience, otherwise I'd probably have walked away with an STD. Every bug-chaser and bare-backer I have met in person, and there are lots out here, has had little self-esteem and very low self-respect verified with other unhealthy behaviors - smoking, etc...which didn't help their looks. I'm not saying all sexually risky people are ugly, but I'd definitely bet the farm that most see themselves that way. Also, diseases and meds really kill your looks too...so I think that would need to be highly researched before classifying all risky people as ugly. Hopefully this may change the mind of a couple vain people out there that have been contemplating risky behaviors.
