Anyone a member? How are their clubs in general? I know it varies from place to place but want to get a general idea. I'm contemplating switching from 24HR Fitness..

It really depends on the gym, as I believe they are all franchised. My local Golds may be spectacular and yours could be a dump, it also depends on management.

Best thing to do is go in, ask for a tour and a week pass or something like that, try it on for size, see if you like it.

I know. My local one is decent but I may be moving soon and there may not be a 24HR Fitness...

I like the local Golds, suits me fine. Good bunch of people--staff & fellow gym rats, and the price is right relative to other local offerings. If you're a member they'll give you a "passport" that gets you into other Golds near & far, I've used that on several occasions when traveling. I've always found other Golds to be up to at least the standards of the home gym, which is to say, no big surprises on the down side.

Like the guys say, it's a franchise, so there can be a wide variation, but in general, I've been in 20-30 different Gold's all over the world, and they were all uniformly well managed and equipped.

One easy call tho is to compare the "average" Gold's franchise versus the "average" 24 Fitness. It's no contest. Gold's trumps 24 hour almost every time. I started my "working-out life" about 11 years ago at 24 hour because I mistakenly assumed they actually stayed open 24 hours -- NOT.

About 3 years later I switched to Gold's and it was like getting into heaven. I actually made immediate gains, I was so happy to be in a nice gym. And no more mildewy smelling pink/turquoise/gray carpet anymore either. Sadly, that original San Jose Gold's was bulldozed during the dot-com boom to be converted into a new office park, which finished just in time for the dot-com crash. Any other fellow SJ Gold's-On-Meridian-Ave mourners out there?

I actually know some of the executive management of 24 Fitness, and let's just say I'm not surprised at the level of slimyness in the management of that chain. Company culture flows down from the top. * shudder *

Gold's varies DRASTICALLY from gym to gym. The one I work out at is awesome (Irmo, SC), but the one I had to go to in Michigan sucked bad and recently closed.
So check out which facilities you'd actually use and make your decision based on that. ;)

Over different years In the past, I've belonged to Gold's Gym and 24 Hour Fitness. I'll admit I am biased toward liking "gyms" over "fitness/health clubs" and preferred Gold's for great equipment, knowledgeable peers and less prima donna posers. Read: every gym, club or fitness center I've belonged to had it's own special type of poser...prima donna posers being the most dramatic.icon_rolleyes.gif

I've found that if one is inclined toward the peacocks and pageantry of a "fitness/health club", 24 Hour Fitness was, in my experience, certainly more tolerable than Bally's.icon_lol.gif

While on a 3 week holiday to the US, I had the opportunity to try out the Gold's Gym at Venice Beach and I was really impressed. The gym was a fantastic size, had nearly every piece of equipment and there were people there who knew what they were doing.

Mind you the women there are scary!! lol

This particular gym (I never got to see LA Fitness or 24 hour fitness) was in my mind a good 9/10. Granted it was still busy in the middle of the day and coming from Australia and being considered rather big, i felt like a midget.

The people at the desk were able to offer me a 7 day pass for $70 which seemed a little steep but I was glad that I was able to at least get that.

Good service, great facilities. Damn I wish we had a gym like that over here!

I believe this gym was in the film Bigger, Better, Stronger?
