Google's Mysterious Barges

Google's latest secret experiment that is becoming too big to hide: Nobody has a real clue what it is but it involves a couple of sea-going barges. One on the east coast, one on the west.

A Google patent application exists for sea-going data centers powered by some sort of wave-action generator.

Google has now released a brief statement: “Google Barge … A floating data center? A wild party boat? A barge housing the last remaining dinosaur?” the statement said. “Sadly, none of the above. Although it’s still early days and things may change, we’re exploring using the barge as an interactive space where people can learn about new technology.”

One reporter ties this to a remark that Larry Paige made about wanting a place to experiment with new technologies beyond the reach of laws and regulations. Maybe five miles off the coast?

Probably something more boring. But fun to speculate. What could they be up to?

Probably unrelated, but years ago when Google started building a data center here, they bought up one whole side of the industrial park. At the time, I couldn't understand why they also bought the barge landing. Probably because they just wanted the land. But... there is a lot of construction going on over there this year.

No need to speculate (as much) any longer:

    http://www.cnn.com/2013/11/06/tech/innovation/google-barge-statement/

Google has finally broken its silence on the mysterious structure atop a barge floating in the San Francisco Bay.

"Google Barge ... A floating data center? A wild party boat? A barge housing the last remaining dinosaur? Sadly, none of the above," the company said in a statement e-mailed Wednesday to CNN and other news outlets.

"Although it's still early days and things may change, we're exploring using the barge as an interactive space where people can learn about new technology," the statement continued.

The barge, docked at a pier on Treasure Island, houses a four-story structure made from shipping containers. Speculation about its purpose has been swirling since discovery of the vessel -- and of three similar barges across the country -- first made headlines early last week.

A more fun headline might have been:

GOOGLE BUILDING OWN FRICKEN NAVY - NEW MEANING FOR "DATA PIRACY?"

Even weirder when you consider what the heck Steve Jobs was thinking when he ordered that big ugly yacht built before he died. Not his usual style. Could he have been planning to arm it for future naval battles with Google?

This is what I would guess it's for.

Very weird; I didn't know about it. Thanks for posting.

That's a Philippe Starck design. Feadship (aka, the best) built. Exterior strikes my eye odd too. Starck did another one with a militaristic looking forward sloping bow. Let me find it.

    Here ya go

I've not seen interior shots of Job's Venus but probably it's breathtaking. The views out through all that glazing (I'll bet that's all bulletproof) must be incredible. Built for a mere 130plus million US. You'd probably need another quarter to half billion dollar nestegg just to bankroll the annual operating costs.

And probably only used a few weeks a year. I'd be one of those tacky billionaires who'd live aboard fulltime, in t-shirt and flip flops.

I believe Google owns a patent for a floating, water cooled data center. This probably isn't it. But it does show Google does have the resources to build such a thing, if needed. With all this NSA eavesdropping drama and net neutrality bullshit, I'm sure it will happen eventually.

Probably already done but we just don't know it.
