I was thinking how many gay people are there. What's the percentages of gay people at school. What's the like hood of finding gay people in a class room or at any given situation.

    I found my answer.

All I needed was a source and sample size. It's very hard to find it though I found it through Facebook.

Up in the search bar, if one types in Men interested in Men with your city and state, it tells you the numbers of how many people are open.

I live near Anaheim, a city in California and the population size is 343,248 as of 2012. The number of gay people listed on Facebook on that city is 62456. I divided the population size and the number of gay people and I got 5.4%.

The gay population is 5.4%(maybe even higher). At any given situation, in a room full of hundreds of people or a classroom at school, there's a chance that 5.4% of them are gay.

I know there be a lot of missed points in my theory. That's the numbers I came close to though.

    Discuss the numbers.

    thoughts?

If you had a soccer team of 80 people, chances are 5.4% of them are gay.

    They do.
I even said the numbers could be higher. If I had to give a different guess, it'd be between 5.4% and 8%

    Sadly, I don't think it's a joke.

El_Tango.. sorry, but your research methods aren't exactly flawless.

For starters, not everyone has facebook (yeah I'm not kidding; quite a lot of people don't).
On top of that, LOTS of guys either a) don't put their sexual orientation on facebook at all, or b) deliberately put a false one on (which goes both ways).

There has actually been real research on this, and I think most of them show around 10% of the population are gay.

I took that into account. I said the numbers can even by higher. That 10% number by Alfred Kinsey back in 1948. How did he even got those numbers in the first place? Everyone was closeted back then and was heavily frowned upon.

Here was his reasoning for that 10%. He said,"The study also reported that 10% of American males surveyed were "more or less exclusively homosexual for at least three years between the ages of 16 and 55" (in the 5 to 6 range)." I got this from wikipedia. I'm thinking everyone took that out of context and thought 10% of the population was gay.

If you think this is a joke, don't bother debating with me then.

Ahh for pete's sake, I even said the number can be higher. I know there are a ton of people on Facebook who aren't out. I have the largest amount of sample size per population you can ever get.

Dude - your numbers are flawed. That's not the number of people who say they are gay - no way are there 50K people in Scottdale that are gay on Facebook in a city of 220K! The numbers for other cities are similar. This is not an accurate way to measure gay populations.

I did the math, it says 4.4%

Hmmmm, I'm going to stick my with 5.4% numbers though. I don't think it's higher than previously believed. Not sure to be honest. Whether if people are aren't out on their facebook is a moot point.

There are so many things you have to "take into account" your entire "research" makes no sense.

    - people who don't have facebook
    - people who don't put their sexuality on their facebook
    - people who put a false sexuality on facebook as a joke
    - people who are still in the closet
    - people who haven't figured themselves out yet

... there are so many things to take into account; too many for your outcome to be valid. You can't just say oh well it can be higher as well. icon_confused.gif

That's like saying you're gonna count all birds in the country, then count only the ones in your back yard and say "well I took into account the ones I couldn't see from here, so the number could be higher."

I'm not talking about Kinsey. I'm talking about recent research (which is a lot more advanced than the research back then). You're not gonna find good research articles on Wikipedia, you know.
The current consensus is that around 10% of the population are gay.

Also, dude! You asked for people to reason with you instead of just saying your thread was stupid or a joke.. here I am explaining to you why and you're giving me that attitude. Really?

    And I said it WASN'T a joke.

Oh boy.. I think you did your math a little wrong. Your numbers would mean 20% of the population are gay. You're supposed to devide the number of gay people by the population size, not the other way around.

I think I did my math right by the way. Whether or not if people are out on Facebook is moot point or if people pretended to be gay. I do have a sizable amount of sample sizes and a huge amount of population. Whether or not if you see if it applies to other cities, you just gonna have to do the math yourself.
