Courageous act, and well-received by his team-mates. Good job, Matt; and great job, team-mates. Someday it won't take soul-searching and the anxiety and depression that comes with it to BE who we are openly, with no expectation other than we're just another guy.

This one made made me tear up a bit. I wish I had that courage when I was his age. But that was before I or my teammates had email to send such a message.

When I was his age, coming out was unthinkable. When I was outed to my parents, I was disowned. We have made an amazing amount of progress since then. I'm glad that Matt was able to come out and that people were supportive.

Great read. I can't imagine the courage it took to write and send the email. Very encouraging especially from the not so liberal south.

A nice looking guy on my high school swim team did this but the wrong way. He ran around the shower room with a total hard on and wrestled with some guys who got totally offended. Coach kicked him off the team.

Most male swimmers are gay, I swam back in HS and did some in college. I'm not surprised at all!! GOOD for Him! Congrats. icon_cool.gif

What makes this young male swimmer a real brave man is that he did this coming out in Texas probably the nation's most virulently homophobic state. That takes a lot of guts especially on a collegiate sports team. I guess that most swimmers on the UT mens swim team must come from out of state.

Under the circumstances, the coach did the only reasonable thing.

Oh wow! I've been going by UT's stadium for the past 3 days. Would've been nice to spot this guy (never been starstruck before).

You definitely need all that courage if you are coming out in virulently homophobic Texas and that's no bullshit.
