Moshe Abutbul, the ultra-Orthodox mayor of Beit Shemesh, says no gays live in his town and homosexuality should be a police matter, amid debate in Israel over a proposal to allow same-sex unions

Ignorance abounds. What about Intersex people? Approximately one out of 2000 babies are intersex or hermaphrodites. They are recently made legal in Germany.

It's shocking that the medical profession don't speak up. just so fuk up.

"Ultra" anything usually involves some kind of extremist thinking, so this is not surprising. Israel is very liberal in some ways when it comes to gay rights (more so than the U.S.).

This is a town of barely 70k people, and they all stick to themselves and live like the Amish, enclosed in their world. They're not hurting anyone but themselves by spouting hate speech.

Not much he can do for the gays that'll be born to his family or the coming generations. He's ignorant and stupid. Isn't this how ancient heroes from the Bible usually come back years later, and take their Rights back from this kind of cruel domination? The world is overdue.

Oh, and gay people, transgendered people, and all those who bear the consequences of this. Is that what you meant by "Not hurting anyone but themselves"?[/quote]

I meant more they're not physically hurting anyone. They don't go riot or anything outside of their town, they don't even know what's outside their own town.

That reminds me of what happened when I lived in Fiji (from 1994 - 2004).

I was the volunteer parish secretary for one of the Anglican parishes. The parish priest, in a sermon, talked about the problem of homosexual priests in the U.S. When I next saw him, I asserted that such statements could drive gay persons in the congregation to suicide. He stated that there were no gay persons in the congregation. I very quickly corrected his ignorance. That was very interesting. I'm sure that he was shocked, but he remained poker faced.

HOLD ON.....I live here in israel ....and let me be clear ...this is one idiot in one really small area ....it in no way reflects ANYTHING ( yes even in caps) that I have experienced here....I have walked down the streets of Tel Aviv and Haifa holding hands with men...one time inn Tel aviv we went round a corner straight into a whole family of religious and they did not bat an eyelid
generally I have found Israelis to be unbelievably accepting of all kinds of differences in people
I work and live in a very straight village in the desert ...and never have I had a problem ....sure the odd person has been homophobic....but nothing that bothered or worried me
Israel is still a bastion of tolerance and plurality

I hope the people who read your post take a step back and reflect on how it is never right to generalize about people.

We have the same issues here from the liberal/progressives who live in the northeast USA and the west coast of the country. They truly believe that the South is nothing but backwards thinking, homophobes. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Thank you again for your posting.

But generalizing about "liberal/progressives" and their alleged views of the South is OK when YOU do it, SB? icon_wink.gif
