Another Oscar contender. Got teary-eyed throughout the whole movie.....What the FDA did in the 80's is atrocious.
Best Actor---Matthew McConaughey, Best Supporting Actor---Jared Leto.

The extremes in body weight loss the actors went through to depict AIDS victims. A list of actors that have dropped a lot of weight for their roles: Michael Fassbender, Christian Bale, Jake Gyllenhaal.....

Just saw it. Leto and McConaughey delivered flawless, powerful performances and will certainly get best actor/supporting actor at Golden Globes and/or Oscars. Aside from some minor technical inaccuracies that annoyed me, this is a great film. I was in med school in Dallas from '82-86. Few of us born after 1970 have any idea of just how many people were dying and what a lukewarm mobilization of govt resources was being dedicated to the pandemic under Regan. All should watch this film.

Finally watched this flick a couple weeks ago, and guys, you're right, this one's got a lot of awards coming. The acting, the writing, the cinematography - all superb. It brings home so well the pain, fear and uncertainty so many went through in the early days of the AIDS epidemic. Well worth your time.

Don’t Applaud Jared Leto’s Transgender ‘Mammy’

'Dallas Buyers Club' has garnered praise for the actor's supposedly brave portrayal of a transgender woman. Don't expect anyone to find it admirable 20 years from now.

A poor article. It bases its arguments on arbitrary Gone With The Wind comparisons. But those aren't in any way valid.

Hattie McDaniel's claim to Oscar fame is being the first Black actor to ever win an Oscar. Not for being the somewhat stereotypical character she was required to play. And even then the Mammy character didn't fit stereotypical slave images from that Hollywood period. She was strong-willed, defiant, and as much her own woman as any slave could actually be in the Old South.

No transgender actor has yet won an Oscar, because Leto merely played one. Nor, just like McDaniel, and despite his claim of researching the role, did he actually write his own dialogue or direct himself on the screen. He's more a product of the film than his own creation. Leto did a good job working with the material he was given, just like McDaniel did.

So that the entire article strikes me as a stereotypical example of - gay bitchiness.
