At my favorite coffee shop here in one of the best gayborhoods of New Orleans, a rather cute & appealing new employee catches my eye and "bongs my gaydar" whenever I see him.

He's thin, 5-9 or so, 30-something, manscaped eyebrows, short, well-maintained, clean dark hair, perfect teeth, tattooed arms, hairy pecs & abs (he lifted his shirt to show me.)

Every time he sees me he smiles and chats me up. Nothing sexual or suggestive, just normal, friendly, guy-stuff. His voice timber and mannerisms are not what I would call overly macho, but hardly nellie. As he is from Mississippi it's hard to tell; voices from that state can sometimes contain a soft, native twang/drawl.

He keeps changes his Face Fuzz from scruff to a well trimmed full beard to a chin strap to a moustache. Today he had a stache & goat similar to mine. He commented that he tried this variation because "it looks so awesome on you".

He softly touches my shoulder or grabs the back of my neck once or twice per visit. As I was leaving today, I lightly slapped/caressed his rib cage. Instead of jumping or twitching or giving me an outraged/embarrassed reaction, he turned, smiled and waved good-bye to me.

At a costume party the coffee shop hosted, he made it a point to have his picture taken with me, arm draped over my shoulder, holding me in tight next to his ribs.

He has a "bear paw" tattoo on his right calf. It's been my experience that this tattoo is popular with the gay bear guys here in New Orleans.

We've discussed the merits and drawbacks of various 4 wheel drive pick up trucks and Jeep CJ-5 models he wants to purchase. Meanwhile he is getting around town on a vespa-like knock off scooter.

The owner of the coffee shop tells me that he is "str8", unattached and looking for a girl friend.

I keep wondering about this one......

I would just ask in casual conversation...

"Hey, may I ask where you got the tat on your calf? I am looking for a good tattoo artist around here."

Then as the convo goes further ask if the tat has any meaning.

    See where it goes.

Totally agree with this dude, ask him what it means for him, or how he got it. This is a safe question, so a part if the mystery is solved. and about the man told you he was straight... he could be right, or the guy just say that because your pal is closeted.

asking about the meaning of his tats would be a good first move. if the issue is still vague afterwards, try gently sliding the conversation towards personal relations. maybe mention an experience you had with an ex or a recent date you had. the trick is dropping subtle words that lets him know that the people you've dated were men without screaming "I LOVE COCK AND I REALLY WANT TO CUSP AND SUCCLE YOURS"

You could just yell out that last line and see what happens.
I don't know if you should put too much stock in tattoos. This sounds awfully similar to that earring thing a few years ago

and not everybody tells their boss exactly what they're looking for
there are advantages to not being out at work especially if you work with homophobic idiots or have a gay boss that's hitting on you

This link says it represents gentleness + fierceness, the wisdom to hear, strength to listen, and courage to follow inner voice.

bro, it has been my theory that if you have to guess than 9 times out of 10 they usually aren't gay. also he seems to just be being friendly with you. i mean he is working at a coffee shop. ha ha ha plus, the manager of the shop said he is straight.. i think you might be searching for something that isn't there

Entirely possible. The "boss" is known to be quite the aggressive bttm boi.

Just get to know him as a friend. He sounds like a great guy. Period. Tred cautiously on the gay thing, because if he's telling his boss he is straight then he's either:

    a) trying to keep a job by passing with a homophobic boss
    b) really is a straight, EMO dude.

In Santa Cruz, we call these guys SNAGS (Sensitive, New-Age Guys).

Drop of few hints of your own. When he's ready, he'll come out. Just enjoy a new friendship.

If he's being that overly friendly there's gotta be more to the story
not really buddy. apparently you do not have many straight guy friends because i know many that are friendly. its so funny to me that i see so many threads like this and they all end up with the same sad end for the most part.
