    I'm mystified.

I'm visiting with some relatives in Nassau County (Long Island), NY. I understood that "Milk" goes into wide release today, and we were planning to go see it. Yet, strangely, it does not seem to be playing ANYWHERE in Nassau County. The closest theater showing it is in Queens.

Nassau County is a major suburban area. It has well over a million residents and is one of the 10 richest counties in the nation. There is an abundance of movie theaters and multiplexes here. I thought "Milk" was to be a major studio release, even an Oscar contender. How is it that I cannot find a theater showing it? Am I missing something here?

Top shelf, behind the apple cider.

Jokes aside, wide release means that it will be showing in 600+ theatres across the country, which is scheduled for next weekend, December 12th. This weekend it was only scheduled to expand from 66 showings to 100.

While the film is an Oscar contender, its slow progression to wide release is due to the fact that it is an independent film that requires word of mouth and developing awareness and audience demand (as manifested by this very thread and other topics in the forum) before the low-budget distributor company spends money on getting the film shown at hundreds or thousands of multiplexes along with high budget action films, big stars vehicles, and teen-targeted franchises.

I had to see it last weekend at our local 'Art' theater. I thought it would get a wider release today, but I don't see it listed anywhere else yet.
    Good movie--BTW

I saw it this past Saturday, EXCELLENT movie. The ending was very hard to watch because you knew what was going to happen. I would actually see it again, Sean Penn was AMAZING.

So it's now out on DVD. Netflix had it in my mailbox today which was a very pleasant surprise. I just finished watching it and found that I really didn't know the story at all or at least not that well. Now I know and I am a better person for it.

    Very good film.

    Very good special features.
