So since this started in Red's thread, I'm really interested to know, do you guys actually believe in certain astrological signs having different personality elements?

How well does your own sign represent you?

I really don't believe in it, although I always find that many people do have the typical characteristics of their sign. Oftentimes, I wonder if that's just because I am sort of pasting those qualities onto them.

There are a variety of concepts in the psychology of prejudice that would explain this - attribution error, distinctiveness error (idea that overattentiveness to unusual circumstances creates fake correlations in our minds), and belief perserverence.

Anyways, I am a stereotypical Aquarian. Totally free-spirited, stubborn, kind of space cadety. In reality, the only characteristic I really don't share with Aquarians is that I'm not unemotional at all.

There has been an idea also in psychology and especially in educational and developmental psychology for a long time that people conform to what's expected of them, and live up to stereotypes about them or people like them. I don't know if that would apply here though.

Aquarians seek truth, and bear it, good or bad. Some rebel and some accept. Some work with it, some against.

    Gemini here! icon_twisted.gif
well, you probably guessed that already.
yes i totally fit the description, and i find that it helps to know what you're dealing with as often as possible. not that i really put a lot of faith in astrology, but star signs provide a framework for understanding a person and such frameworks can be useful.
my bf is a capricorn and just as willful and stubborn as a goat.

    see, it works!icon_lol.gif

I'm an Aries in the western horoscope and a snake in the eastern (Chinese) horoscope.

Regarding your question, I don't think that everyone is 100% of the characteristics that your astrological sign represents. However I have to say that some of them are dead on in my case. For one, I don't like to follow... anything, anyone, rules or conform to things... not my style. I'd rather lead and go out on a limb and fail miserably, but go out with a bang! I'm impatient and have a feeling I may have A.D.D... Huh.. what was I talking about?!?.. Oh yeah, ummm I tend to start many things, projects and stuff, but never or rarely ever follow through or complete any of them. Last, but by far the least... I'm blunt to the point where I tend to come off as being a complete asshole... WHATEVER BITCHES! icon_rolleyes.gificon_twisted.gif *insert evil laugh*

On another yet similar note, I found this really cool website where it combines your western and eastern signs and this is what my result was:

    Photobucket

Check it out for yourselves, copy and paste the following link to get your result... http://www.ofesite.com/spirit/chinese/westeast/westeast.htm

Woo hoo... kickass, just realized this is my 100th post! Just 900 more before I can address the LOL cat man! Happy happy joy joy!!!

I don't believe that each astrological sign fits a specific characteristic. I strongly believe in the correlation between two signs though. I think astrology is more of the interaction between two signs not their individual personalities.

Oh yeah. I'm a taurus. Stubborn, sexual, blah, blah, blah. . . What it really means. . .

My best of friends are usually Pisces and Sagittarius. I can get along with Gemini but stay my distance. Relationships are Capricorn, Virgo, sometimes Cancer. I'm sexually attracted to Scorpio (I won't put up with their in-decisiveness and passiveness). Aquarius and Aries are great mothers. LIbra is OK. Leos aren't good

No I really don't, but it is kind of fun to see patterns. For instance I seem to become close to a lot of Aquarians. The sister I was closest to growing up, my first bf, my best gay friend, my nephew, and at least two internet friends. IDW why that is. I also seem to know a lot of Leos. My best friend growing up, another bf, my brother and an internet friend.

I am a goat (capricorn) like my Mom. We have very few personality traits in common.

i'm a cancer. i'm such a cancer that i'm a stereotype of cancers. in fact, i'm so overwhelmingly cancer that i'm getting teary eyed with pride, no embarrassment, no confusion, no depression, no... HEY, what a pretty butterfly!

i have the singular trait of being the only sextuple anything that i've ever met:

    sun: cancer
    moon: cancer
    ascending: cancer
    mercury: cancer
    venus: cancer
    mars: virgo
    jupiter: cancer
    saturn: leo
    neptune: can't remember
pluto: same as everyone else in my generation

my sign represents me perfectly: i am an utter moon child and a total water spirit.

Sun in Aquarius, Moon and Rising Sign in Cancer. I'm actually more of a Cancer in many ways, but I've been described as being an Aquarius from the neck up (always thinking, analyzing, etc.) and Cancer below the neck (i.e. feeling oriented, loving, etc.)

Yeah I believe in it. Scorpio's inherently need people.

Also, Scorpio's only get on with Scorpio's and one or two other star signs max (I think Pisces is one). Scorpio's are very sexual.

    All true ;)

You shouldn't get on that ship. Those aliens just want to eat you, and not in the good, fun gay way. Look closely at the book in your hands, it's a cookbook.

yes- i'm a TEXTBOOK Aquarius lol- cusp born with Capricorn, first decant. Moon in Scorpio, Cancer rising.

many people don't understand WHY it works, though i do and it takes volumes of writing to explain so i won't here- but suffice to say, its abstract and has to do with metaphysics concerning the interconnectedness of everything, and at its simplest, the ancient adage of 'as above, so below; as below, so above; in the unity of the One Thing.' meaning, macro and microcosms are intimately entwined and reflect each other. the universe is a living body, as we are miniature universes, and they mirror each other.

the main criticism of the system is from people who don't entirely see themselves in their own sun sign's description. what we have to remember though, is that the sun sign doesn't determine everything about you (or there'd only be 12 types of people in the world)... rather, its a skeletal framework upon which everything else is built, heavily influenced and modified by sex, cusps and decants, moon sign, ascendent sign, the positions of the planets at the moment of birth, what houses they fall into in the sky's divisions, what signs they fall under in a natal chart, how they interrelate to each other, etc... it gets complex. so complicated, in fact, and specific, that even twins born moments apart would have slightly different natal charts, resulting in different personalities and destinies. the likelihood of two charts being identical is something ridiculous like one in several hundred billion. even people born on the same date at the same time would have completely different charts if they're at different LOCATIONS because, obviously, the heavens look different depending on where one stands.

as to the issue some bring up of 'vagueness' making each sign applicable to anyone who WANTS to see themselves in it.... any astrological work of value will not be so vague, and furthermore, that issue is addressed above- the vagueness is entirely weeded out as more layers of depth and influence are factored in. i've not yet met a person who didn't think my natal chart for them wasn't freakishly 90-some percent accurate, down to tiny details and unique personality quarks. and i'm not even very good at it.

in any case, i think many people knock it cause they don't understand it, or haven't come across any astrological work of quality.... much like homophobes' and their incomplete opinions of gay men.

i am a taurus. i've been told by friends who are into astrology that i'm a total taurus. we make good and loyal friends but are finicky and indecisive when it comes to relationships. i read my horoscope from time to time for shits and giggles but i don't take it very seriously. i've always found the information in horoscopes to be so vague that it can apply to virtually any situation in anyone's life. now fortune cookies... that's a different story! lol
