    Hello everyone! icon_biggrin.gif

I have moved to Naperville like three months ago from Croatia. I really wanted to go to Chicago and meet guys but I just don't know how to do it. I mean, I could go to the bars and such but I don't know if it would be awkward if I would just be hanging on there alone. :/

I heard that Boystown is like a gay district but I also heard that it is mainly about clubs and such but I am more into conversation and getting to know people rather than just going to dance.

Is there any place where gays go to just have conversation and meet other people? icon_smile.gif

Any suggestion would be welcomed! ;)

    welcome to chicago,

yes boystown is well known for its clubs, but it is also the the location for the Center on Halsted. this is our community center for lgtb folk of all ages. they are the resource center for many of the the activities that happen in the chicagoland area.

you can write back if you need more specific questions answered. good luck in your new home.

my suggestion is LA or MIAMI.

    that is all.

Looks like someone posted this after going home alone from Sidetrack…. Don't worry Stacked, tonight's another night to try and get laid in Chicago...

Lol you guys are too funny....

I believe you will struggle socializing in bars anywhere... the better alternative might be to join one of the gay sports leagues or to go to a bar during the week when they are having trivia, karaoke, etc. Just google for direction, dates.

If you want a map of what is going on the bars, to the extent of my knowledge:

    Boystown:
Sidetrack - everyone makes at least one stop here during the night. Affordable drinks, lots of places to walk around, good looking people. Hard to strike conversation with strangers, since they are in groups.

Progress - the new sidetrack/ minibar. Not sure if it is the music or the lights, but good looking people are crowding here. Also hard to strike conversation, mostly groups.

Replay - assortment of craft beers, free video games, no cover and a porch. What could be better? If you go by yourself you can always enjoy Street Fighter with a beer :-)

Hydrate - small, with cover, you have to be into that music. Maybe good for dancing at 2 am. Shirtless is appreciated.

Closet - Lesbian bar that turns gay after 2am. Everyone is already drunk and friendly, good to start conversation. Not much else to do, small. Know your drink or the bartender will be angry at you. Ask about their famous bouncer who became a tv personality.

Roscoe - younger crowd and their admirers. It's fun if you like throwing paper napkins to the air while Rhianna is singing about finding love in hopeless places.

Scarlet - small and dj with unique point of view, but can be fun. If you are inside you are dancing, no escape. Go there alone and in a good mood and you are going to make a friend. Laid back crowd.

Wangs - do not go there on the last Friday of the month!!! lol

Minibar - it can be alright, they are known for attracting pretty people and nice lights and sounds.... you be the judge. Best part is the stripper pole downstairs, everyone must spin around it at least once in their lives.

Spin - pool table, drag queens

    Circuit - latin

Bonsai - I have no idea what is going on there.

Charlies - they have gay country dancing, and after two is a hangout for those not looking to go home alone. They do have smoke machines in the dance floor and restroom that invites interaction.

Cellblock - seedy place with friendly bartender. Could be interesting, but from my experience it is mostly empty except if there is a rubber/ leather event going on. Stop by to peek at the dark side of life lol

Little Jim - mostly for seasoned gentlemen, interesting seating arrangements. If you come here strike a conversation with the bartender about the bar's past and learn a bit of chicago history

North End - very laid back. Come here for the darts, punch machine, pool table and friendly bartenders.

Lucky Horseshoe - they have strippers and their admirers.

Berlin - not officially gay, but it is the intersection of everything. Can be the best night of your life or the worst. If you are into Madonna, this club becomes a temple every last sunday of the month for all her followers. Might be worth a visit, it is like going to her show but for $5.

    Andersonville
Big chicks - great place to go by yourself if you have an open mind. Laid back crowd. Dance floor is empty until 12am, when they serve free shots and people start dancing. Worth checking out :-)

Marys Attic - interesting place, dance floor, chair lounge and leg lamp.

Touche - for seasoned gentlemen into leather and other fetishes.

Jackhammer - also for people into fetishes, but with more room to walk around. The sex shop next door is connected, feel free to browse their inventory while having a beverage. When you are in the main bar having a drink and watching porn, remember that the restroom is to the right. Be careful when you go to the left and downstairs! lol

    Downtown
    Baton - drag queens

Downtown - regular bar, I guess for the people that live there?

    Second story - ?

    Pilsen/ South side
    ?

Hope this helps. Go out exploring and come up with your own opinions, it is a good excuse to be out :-)

being stationed here, ive spent plenty time in boystown. pretty much its a meat fest, guys lookin to go home with other guys by the end of the night. it is a lotta fun, clubs everywhere. the above description of the clubs is very accurate tho. i usually go to sidetracks roscoes and sometimes hydrate on a typical night out. lots of shirtless guys at hydrate. and yea, have a friend when u go out. dont b a creeper at the bar without any friends

Chicago is less about where you're going and more about how you're going about it.

    Be aggressively friendly.

I've found that most guys in Chicago are actually very nice... and very timid when it comes to people outside their small social circle. If it looks like people are standing around in cliques, it's not because they're all judging everyone else in the room: it's because that small group is their comfort zone. It may as well be a bubble. Part of making new friends is taking a couple shots to loosen up before going and invading the bubble.

Most people are happy to make a new friend or acquaintance and after that initial meeting are very friendly. But it's generally on you to make the first move.

I've been here nearly a year now and I've been approached exactly once haha.

Larky....you are a kind of intimidating , big muscular guy....that doesn't wear a "rainbow sachet", red pumps and a tiara, very well to announce your "availability"....I'd hit on you in a matter of moments!...because that's me....LOL!

You could attend a MeetUp; there are various gay groups/activities available in the Chicago metro area...

Be assured that Chicago is SO MUCH MORE INTERESTING than the surrounding rural areas. icon_smile.gif it always brightens my day when I have an excuse to head to the city.

If youre there at the right day you might find me in a boys town coffee shop, looking out the window at all the beautiful men going past and wondering what it would be like to hook up with one. ;)

Couldn't you say that about any major urban area, not just Chicago? After all, what are CT, Jersey, Long Island, Edina, Grapevine, Walnut Creek, Bellevue, or Riverside without the major city anchor?

MuchMoreThanMuscle saidI lived in Chicago for 41 years of my life. I found it very difficult to meet and socialize with other gay men in the area. Now that I live in the Pacific Northwest my social life has improved exponentially. Needless to say, I do not miss Chicago or the gay scene at all. Overall, the guys might be better looking in Chicago but it wasn't working for me. Good luck on meeting guys in Chicago. I can honestly say I don't miss it one bit.

Absolutely no disrespect to you, but I don't understand how your post is helpful to the OP.

The suburbs are far from perfect, they have their fair share of crime and other problems. Chicago is a magnificent, world class city. Anyone that thinks suburbs are better than this great city is either blind or just plain stupid.
