aldss saidHi guys really need some good advice. Looking to book my first holiday to the key west, the gay part. I've looked online and haven't found any package deals or much information about the best time to travel.
Questions I have
: where is the gay part in key west or is key west all gay.
: any hotel reconditions.
: any known sites to book package deals
There is no "gay" part per se, but most of the tourist sights & attractions are at the western end of the island, known as "Old Town". You can pretty much walk to everything from there, or rent a bike or scooter. Duval Street is the main tourist drag, so map yourself from there. You don't need a place on the beach, there are public ones to use, but you'll need at least a bicycle to reach them.
There's a good selection of hotels & guest houses in Old Town, but the gay ones are disappearing fast, being converted to straight by outside investors. It's happening so quickly that some online gay guides still list them as gay, but places like Big Ruby's have already gone straight, that one as recently as Nov 1st. Phone to confirm.
Avoid hotels at the eastern end of the island. Too far away from any attractions, you'd need a car or taxi, and parking in Old Town is very difficult to find.
Remaining gay hotels/guest houses include Island House, Equator, La Te Da, and New Orleans House (where we've stayed for years, though I've stayed at the others, too). Island House is the cruisiest but at the far end of Fleming Street & relatively expensive, a hike to anything else. Equator is closer to Duval Street & more reasonable but much smaller. New Orleans House is right on Duval but has gotten more expensive as the other gay hotels have closed, and it's just a bit crude, what I call "Key West Ramshackle". La Te Da is the other gay hotel on Duval, smaller than NOH but more elegant (in KW terms). Recently also sold but to a gay guy who's expected to keep it very gay.
Key West hotels have upwards of 12 different room rates during the year, plus unannounced specials, so price is very dependent on date of stay. There is a summer "off season" low rate and a higher winter "in season" rate. But all year can be higher rates for every holiday and local event, like Fantasy Fest, Bone Island, New Year's Eve, etc.
You need to check the online rate lists for each place, and then call directly for the latest info. Some have minimum stay requirements of 3 days, that may have to include a weekend day.
Please email me directly for questions. BTW, we just returned from Key West last week, and will be spending another full week there in mid January. We go upwards of 6 times a year, a quick drive for us of less than 200 miles.
Second BTW: I'm not aware of any regular KW packages for gay travelers, though most hotels will give you discount coupons to certain local restaurants and attractions, a typical US custom. But not true packages that include airfare, car rental, lodging and other accommodations.
