Fish as primary protein source?

    What are your thoughts on eating fish as a primary/majority source of protein? I'm kinda getting tired of chicken and want to switch things up a little. Anyone else on a high fish diet? How has it worked out for you?

    fish is good for you but a fish diet will make you lose weight believe me....as Josh said you need to add a little something to your diet bananas, avocados, almonds (easy on those tho, they can make you very sick and cause skin problems) try swish cheese its high in protein and fat

    Doesn't that depend on whether it's an oily fish or not? Sardines are about 11% fat,Salmon 13%.
    If eating a lot of fish try to eat varieties from low in the food chain, more sustainable & less likely to concentrate heavy metals.

    fish have low fat...the fat that is in fish is very good, and it is proven that fish diets always help you lose weight, helps remove blood cloths and help your eye vision, its a good way of eating protein, but you should mix foods...dont limit yourself to 1 protein just because it has the biggest amount....calculate the necessary protein intake and eat it from different foods...it will help more if u have a variable menu

    when you look at the grams its not much compared to protein and I'm sure your macros can fit the fat from fish + probably another 10-20 grams

    I think we'll be seeing more inland Tilapia farming. A relatively inexpensive source of high quality protein.

    Just make sure the fish is wild caught fish and not farmed. Farmed fish has a bad rep for containing high levels or mercury and other bad chemicals.

    I think you've got that backwards. We went through a major scare about mercury in fish way back in the 70s or 80s and it was wild fish that they were talking about. The higher up in the food chain they are the more mercury they are likely to have.

    I think it depends on if they are farmed organically or not. Some of the inland farmed fish is heavily toxic and extremely unhealthy to eat.

    Yeah, mercury levels are on my mind. And that's what kinda prompted me to ask this question. I understand that most ocean fish have higher levels of mercury. So tuna is out off the list as an everyday food. I heard salmon is one of the safest to eat. But that can get kinda expensive. Not sure about tilapia. Never had it before. And I've been reading some mixed info, regarding its nutritional values.

    I think it's generally a good idea to mix your source of protein up and not think of any one thing as your primary protein source. Fish is healthy, like most things, in moderation and you are best off concentrating on the fish that is lower in mercury. Also, you will get the best protein and fish oil from eating wild fish rather than farmed. Wild salmon is excellent as is wild striped bass or black bass.

    Fish is a great protein source and great tasting too. Unfortunately fish can be very expensiveicon_sad.gif

    Fish has been my main source of protien for over six months. That and eggs. I havent made chicken in that time at all as i can remember
    The mercury thing has little to do with farm fish, which is where most fish at the market comes from. Course farms have their own issues.
    I like it. No helth complaints at all.

    Well I love and often eat chicken or hardboiled eggs cause I love the yolk that way, second most pork then lamb..Lolz *shhub

    But I was told fish is bloody hell Good! , but I'm spoilt only eat them fillet..and I have a thing that I don't quite eat fresh water fish cause it smells..unless it is well marinated Chinese style with lots old ginger or the Indian style the deep fried with turmeric power.

    otherwise I would go Saba fish or tuna or sardines anytime. Dry chilli stir fry light with garlic and mustard seed with sardine is cool. Salmon is okay not entirely cause I'm bored with the taste.

    Well on the overall you can never go wrong with fish, especially fatty fish as your main source you have it all, like what Yourname2000 said...aside on a level if you lean towards Muchmorethanmuscle you can't go wrong either on a strictly veg diet.

    True, iv read thoes articles too. Hence i stay away from Tilapia from China.
    Chicken has arsinic, beef hormones, wild fish mecury and has been radiated. You cant win.
    Make the best of what u got.
    Oh i tried being vegitarian twice. Both times i.had adverce reactions.
    The fish as of late has been the best for me thus far. I feel the most healthy and at the most muscular condition of my life.

    Mercury...I personally wouldn't eat it more than 2 times a week...Look at packaging...if it originates from Japan or China..don't buy.

    And selfie77: the salmon don't eat krill, like they do in the wild. That's where the O3s come from. It's what normally gives salmon their orange color, but in farmed salmon that's just a food dye they put in the feed. You can google "salmon color charts" and probably see images of the color wheels dye companies sell fish farms so they can get the color of salmon they're looking for.

    Very interesting. I do prefer to buy the wild caught from Alaska / the Pacific Northwest, but probably in many restaurants you get the farmed stuff.

    It's already getting weird. Fish with lesions on their gills. Polar bears losing their fir. This is going to be pretty ugly. Anyway, arctic char should be good for a while, lol.
    Time to go vegetarian.
