Thanks to daytime talk shows (Merv Griffin!) in the early seventies I learned about transsexuals. (Back then when the world was really changing and people were more openly experimenting talk shows and their studio audiences usually handled sexual controversy without sensationalism and with a lot of tact and respect.) Anyone else remember that show where he had the tall, thin MTF with the long blonde surfer chick hair and the short, rugged ruddy-complexioned bearded FTM? (Who, if memory serves, began life as a female coach.
Seriously.) While Merv kidded that the male crew had been checking out/wolf whistling the MTF, even then I found the FTM more convincing. At 10 or 12 I thought he could totally pass, anywhere. I once saw Chastity Bono in her early twenties at my local bar with a posse of girls and she was a pretty girl. A couple years ago I was face to face with Chaz at Miami Gay Pride and if I didn't know who he was if you'd thrown an apron on him he'd have passed for any other short butcher, hot dog vendor or short order cook with a Napoleonic complex you've ever met. From the sidelines I took a pic of Chaz, who I met later:
Anyway, FTM's (female-to-males) are almost universally the more attractive conversion, more likely to pass as pretty (albiet short, small-jointed and somewhat high-pitched) men, whereas MTF's often make for ugly, tall, big-boned women (glamorous drag queens aside) with adam's apples. This is nothing new - it's about what both genders start with.
