Williams was a gay actor and theatre owner who arranged to smuggle Mandela in and out of Johannesburg. Having been caught by the authorities, after a long period under house arrest, Williams was able to escape to England. It is because of Mandela's friendship with Williams, that Mandela insisted on including equal rights for gays under the new South Africa constitution. -
