Probably of interest to those "old" guys on here - the over 40 set, NBC is amazingly putting on a live production of The Sound of Music. When was the last time there was a real live broadcast of anything (except for the Oscars, etc)? Stars Carrie Underwood. She's no Mary Martin, but she can sing. Live acting, though the music will be canned.

SlickJock1973 saidAn interesting experiment. I have read that in the beginning days of television everything was done live.

Yes, and I saw Mary Martin live in Peter Pan in the mid-50s, absolutely magical.

But The Sound of Music? No, it didn't work. I saw about 3 minutes of it and turned it off.

I'm partial to the movie with Julie Andrews. No one else can compare.

I'll second that. Why did NBC feel the need to mess with perfection? They should have just run the movie.

Caught the last 20 minutes. Struck me as either the best high school version of the show ever or the end of live network musical theatre broadcasts.

I watched the whole thing, and have to agree; although the choreography was good. Unfortunately for Carrie Underwood, her singing couldn't hold a candle to that of Audra McDonald, who was great as the Mother Superior of the convent. She can really sing.

Have to agree with the above too. Carrie Underwood did an OK job, but Julie Andrews will always be THE only Maria Von Trapp! They also cut out one of my favourite songs (I Have Confidence In Me), and added in two very forgettable ones instead...

That's because "I Have Confidence In Me" was never in the stage show. It was written for the movie; the music is by Rodgers but the lyrics are not by Hammerstein, who died right after the stage show opened in 1960. And the songs you deemed "forgettable" are in fact from the stage show, but were cut from the movie.

    Oooh, BUUUUUUUURNNNN!!

I was forced to watch it by my parents when I was a kid back in the 70s. LOL.

I found it hilarious all the people getting their knickers in a twist "it's not in the same order as the movie!". No shit, dumbasses. If you had read even one article about it before you watched, you would have known that it was restaging the original Broadway.

Carrie sang nicely, but couldn't act her way out of a paper bag. Vampire Bill couldn't sing a lick-would it have hurt to get someone who could? Christian Borle was OK, Laura Benanti was great, but Audra? OMFG-brilliant. Let's find something she can do as the lead, pronto.

I wish I had recorded it for when I can't sleep. I was out before they even finished "My Favorite Things."

I didn't think it was great and I agree that it was miscast. Carrie Underwood was awful both in acting and even her voice missed notes all over the place. Sound was bad and there was a constant hiss throughout most big numbers from gain. But... It was still kind of fun to watch. I saw it as a young kid on Broadway and of course the movie was amazing. But... The British have a thing in their theatre that is different from ours. They constantly gather a good cast and re-stage old productions with the new viewpoint adding some interest. Not every play is supposed to be the best version you've ever seen, just interesting and fun to watch. And they intentionally open and close in six months. The problem here is American audiences are stage struck by celebrity and musicals now seem to need some big name to head up the marquee. Whether they have the skills to pull it off or not. But production values should be good and in this case they were not. The director selecting which camera shot to broadcast was good. Set design was OK but not well detailed, and some of the performances OK. Not true Broadway, though, not often. Missed opportunity. Still, fun.
