HIV Inspired Tattoos

I am putting together an art project based around HIV inspired tattoos. I am looking to travel around the US then broaden it to the rest of the world to photograph these markings.

Just as we brand ourselves with clothing labels we wear and the groups we associate ourselves with, plenty of people with HIV brand themselves with a marking to represent a change in their life or to give a warning to others.

Each person does it for a different reason. With each new marking they may be using symbols that most wouldn’t recognize with HIV but has significance to them with their seroconversion.

As I have talked with different people the topic of HIV positive people being branded to allow people to know of someone’s status should happen which has always startled me. It takes a step back from all that has happened over the years. While other really don’t care because of the fact of PEP and Prep are out there so they aren’t as worried about catching the virus from having unprotected sex.

I am hoping by putting up this topic to get some opinions of people to advance this art project and to find people to photograph and talk with about the subject. Finding out Stigmas from HIV negative people and HIV+ reactions to people who come at them with these stigmas.

I’m not asking for people to post within the forum since I know that’ll create a Hell-storm of opinions with rants that are pointless. If you would like to share with me and don’t want to post, I’d love to receive a message. And if you’re up for being photographed please let me know as well.

    Thanks everyone

Joe: Cool tattoo dude. What's it mean?

Bruce: Oh, it symbolizes this deadly disease I carry in my body.

Joe: icon_eek.gif think I left something on the stove........

That sounds like an awesome ideal! Poz tats are an important way people own their status without being defined by it.
