The US and AUS are so similar. They are about 10 years behind us in a few areas, this being one of them.

I guess on the bright side it clarifies that the federal government is able to amend the marriage act for equality.. if/when they do.

It really sucks for the couples getting their marriages annulled though.

This in itself is a huge step forward and showed courage from the Justices.

A good summary of this point is at http://www.smh.com.au/comment/high-court-paves-the-way-for-samesex-marriage-20131212-2z8kk.html#poll

yet ahead in other ways. We have a better stranded of living, and out health care was worked out years ago; albeit it could use some tweaking.

We have a minim wage, were people don't have to live off tips, and as a Aussie poofter, a feel I am better off than most gay Americans.

We are also not the worlds largest christian country either, albeit America wants to invade us and change that; just as Vatican City would love to.

This is of no shock to me, as I knew it would come to pas. Just grateful it does not effect my life or relationship, to my American husband.

Two steps forward, one step back. That's how equality proceeds.

That's right, but ahead in others areas. But then Australia is not next on the list to be world leader, or want to be; China is.

i'm a bit surprised. i thought australians were a little more progressive and forward thinking than us compartmentalized americans. i guess shit rolls all over the planet.

what's next to counter act this in the future? is there any hope other than dragging the prime minister out of office and publicly shaming him. is he really that against same sex marriage?

Sorry to hear for the handful of couples that got married in ACT. I kind of understand it from a constitutional perspective, since Australia isn't quite as states-rightsy as we are here. Hopefully the Parliament can turn this around in the very near future.

This definitely puts it to perspective. It is unfortunate those couples who married are now legally unwed again, but this is one step in ensuring the rights for the many and cementing the idea of true equality into AUS law.

In fact Tony Abbot has always been transparent of this issue, the Labor Government did noting about it while it had the chance, since 2007.

Failed R/G term? the only failing here was by society, for being absolute ignorant fools and being unable to define their own happiness, and expecting a government to make them rich and happy. Of course the liberals sounded great: "Well make you rich, save you money, and make you look sexier in budgie smugglers too!" In reality, what has abbott accomplished other than shattering habitat after habitat and ecosystem after ecosystem, and setting up Australia to be the biggest laggard in international climate action and abatement? In a few short months our new "Gay, churchy loser" of a PM (as stated by his DAUGHTER)has already done more future-damage to this country than the "red-headed lesbian" could have done in her entire lifetime. Although he has empowered ignorant people everywhere and made them feel secure from people who want to be mean to them grrrrr and stealz their rights. What does being king of the jesters make one? The most popular fool in the court.

    Still sad though.

He has always been transparent about this issue; agree, or disagree. Albeit I admit Rudd and Gillard had to go, it's sad we did not have more choices in the last election.
