Hard to believe our economy is in a period of solicitude when I drive past any shopping center (like Stanford yesterday) and see every parking place full - with plenty of cars waiting for a spot. Or - downtown San Francisco - thousands of people shopping at all the stores around Union Square.

If you want to feel assured that our economy is swirling down the drain you could always pay me a visit in Buffalo.

Buffalo reminds me a bit of Newfoundland, which never really left the Great Depression! In my lifetime I don't think the unemployment rate in Newfoundland has ever gone below 10%.

The malls may look busy - but is anyone buying? One of my major clients is a shopping center developer and their company is tanking due to store closures, non-payment of rent, empty spaces and expensive overhead.

Ahh, there's nothing like the rust belt economy of Buffalo to hold up as a counterargument to a case made from Palo Alto...

The malls here are quite busy as well...but as you walk around...you note that almost no one has bags. I think people are waiting for even deeper discounts.

I've also noticed a LOT of people doing major Christmas shopping at Target vs mall stores and big box retailers.
