    Vomit!

Both about religion and this guy's writing. Didn't make it all through his rambling.

Gods were invented because people were afraid of being alone and wanted to explain events they couldn't understand.

Christianity is so successful because it promises eternal life in paradise after death, the biggest carrot imaginable. Just jump through these hoops and you get the ultimate prize. Just endure your life of misery now to live in paradise after death. Way to keep people compliant!

Religions also create 2 groups, one of believers and the others. Usually the others are the enemy, whatever you do to them, they deserve it and you're excused, because they aren't your brothers/sisters. So lots of person to person violence can be attributed to religion. Not sure about wars, though, which I think are about greed, religion is just a convenient excuse.

    It's a naive question.
Ask why science creates wars too.
It's because the leaders for *everything* are power hungry lunatics.
None the religious people I know support any war.

Look at human history, religion, along with ideology & divine territorial claim has caused more deaths throughout human history; people fighting in the name of their god & their intolerant beliefs, idealogies & dogmas, battles that have been fought & gone on for decades, only to restart again.....

Look at what is happening in Russia. Vladimir Putin is teamed up with the senile fuckheads at the Russian Orthodox Church and advancing his horribly inhumane anti-gay agenda.

That's statistically untrue. I've already supplied in other threads a list of aethiest leaders who led genocides. We recycle too much here.

But throughout human history, more long battles have been fought with more deaths all in the name of religion.

    @Jaggal
I like you too. That said.
Science may not say you *have* to kill but it's used to kill, just as people have used religion to kill.
(I went to church for decades until I coukdnt take how depressing it was any more but no one ever told us to kill anyone even once.)
There's a show on the SCI channel called DARK SCIENCE.
It documents the many atrocities scientists have done in the name of science. It's so horrible I can't watch it.
We all have different belief systems and that's good.
For example, I think the way scientists experiment on aborted fetuses is more depraved than anything the Spanish Inquisition did.
Long story short, we have to stick together as gay people and not alienate our religious members who do not do old thinking.

Tanner, which battles are you talking about and what religious passages told them they had to fight these battles?
I'm not saying there aren't any, I'm saying I doubt they out-number the deaths for non-religuous battles.
As I've written before (and people have argued the point) Hitler's genocide was inspired by Darwinian Evolution, not religion.

Because they are unable to see the similarities in their fellow humans. They start to define people as different and wrong, this on an extreme end leads to murder and wars.
