Canadians: What's so special about Ignatieff and why is everybody stepping out of the way for him? ...and why is Hervieux-Payette saying "...they don't understand anything about democracy"

"Bob Rae has formally announced he is withdrawing his bid for the Liberal leadership, paving the way for Michael Ignatieff to become the party's new leader."

"Liberal Sen. CĂ©line Hervieux-Payette, who participated in the conference call, was reportedly furious over the process by which Ignatieff will take power, Fife said.

"This will destroy the Liberal Party, I'm devastated by what this will do to the party, they don't understand anything about democracy," she said, ..."

To be honest, I'm kind of glad. I don't know much about Ignatieff, but the last thing the Liberal party needs right now is to be fractured and spending time deciding who should lead them. They need someone who has more charisma and can speak English clearer than Dion. If another election is called soon, that's what they will need to get back some of the many seats they lost in the most recent election. Ignatieff seems to have those features, to me at least.

I guess I need to start reading BBC News again. I'm not up on these names at all. I just hope the Liberals can defeat the more conservative parties.

Ignatieff was the runner-up in the last leadership campaign so it's not all that surprising to see him basically be 'crowned'. He did the 'right thing' and stepped aside for Dion, which was probably a mistake. They need someone primed and ready to lead because they really only have 2 months before they have to vote on the budget.

It's smart of them to use this time effectively - regardless, if they force an election the public's going to be PISSED. That's a lot of money to be summarily thrown away and respent, especially in these 'economically turbulent' times.

And if they DO force an election then the public will be forced to choose between a fractured and volatile 'coalition' that could collapse at any minute and trigger ANOTHER election - or bite the bullet and go Blue strong and free.

Take your pick - I stand by my choice.

Well, my first reaction was that the video was mocking internet proliferation laws by posting a 'restricted access' message, but the time index has the clip as being 4:18 long.

On the other hand, if it's not a joke than no, I can't see it.

No, no. It's Fuck **u Viacom, and FUCK Y** CBS Paramount. The coproate polices of those two companies are what prevent you from seeing the websites of all their divisions in Canada.

    BTW Wikipedia is great!

Did the USA conquer PEI? And here I always thought it would be the Japanese who would do that.

As for Iggy...he's nothing special but the Liberals are in trouble, lacking leadership, direction, and money. They can ill afford a long battle and the country can ill afford Bob Rae.

Naw, the BBC does it too. I've stumbled across entire BBC SITES that I couldn't access because I'm not in the UK - and we still have the 'queen' arbitrating our government, lol.

Here is some information about who was running against Iggy for Leader Liberal Party:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Rae

The guy who finished third, behind Iggy in the 2006 leadership race. Bob Rae and Iggy were room mates back in University, and have been friends for 40 years.

Canadians can watch the show here:

Iggy's grandfather was a russian count and advisor to Nicholas II ...and the only top advisor to Nicholas to escape execution by the Bolsheviks.

So you are chummy enough to call him Iggy?
What do you call your President-elect: Obie?

Clearly, the russians are covertly taking over Canada. icon_razz.gif

Also, that clip was funny. When I'm confused - I turn to the Queen. Kind of like what God would be like, if God was Queen.

    Caught Ya!!!

What happened to that rule you used to have about not allowing being addressed directly in the forums unless the poster has more than 1000 post to their name? What happened? Did you forget about that?

    icon_lol.gificon_razz.gificon_lol.gif

p.s. you spelled Ignatieff correctly in the headline of forum.

Rules do not apply to the threads I post in.

Cause um...I'm kind of a big deal.
