I was about to show this to my husband for a laugh, but stopped when I realized he might want to euthanize ME because of all the time I spend on RJ. icon_sad.gif

I have two sons that would qualify.....they just stare blankly at their computer monitors colors and motion and then their fingers and thumbs twitch wildly when a controller is nearby.....icon_rolleyes.gif

My dad would say exactly the same as you would. You know how annoying that is? What is wrong with this? Our generation develepped different ways to communicate and spend our time. It may not live up to your standards of spending time, cause back in the days you would go out, you would hang out with your friends. We don't do this the same way as you used to do. Are we lesser persons because of it? Ofcourse there is a limit, but there is also exagerating. Which is what you are doing now. Im sure your sons are annoyed by comments like these, cause you probably say things like this in their presence as well.

Anyway thats just my 2 cents..

Your dad may have a point, but without the rest of the story...2 cents still isn't worth very much.....
Life IS very different in SOME respects between my generation and my sons.....but one of the great constants in life that crosses ALL generations is that when you make your own money and pay your own bills and support yourself....you can spend your "free time" recreating any way you want without criticism.......until that happens and they live under my roof and are "dependents"....fair game for my criticism....And quite honestly...my sons are NOT lesser men for it but ARE certified geniuses with photographic memories with no drive or ambition and a very small circle of friends... This is what I am critical of...LAZY, priorities out of whack and working in jobs that are way below their skill sets....like any parent I want them to have so much more than I ever did.

This discussion brings my inner teen up, and thats not too long ago icon_razz.gif. I hate the argument you bring in with the living under your roof thing. I've heard that one so many times. They don't really have much choice when they are like 16 besides living under your roof, right? Ofcourse you are a loving parent that wants them to fill in their lifes to the maximum potential. But don't you think they need to discover that for themselves? Ofcourse you can help them by getting into serious conversations with them, but the typical comments that parents make to their gaming children do only cause annoyance and fights. At least thats how it went with me and my dad. We are good now,but having to hear those comments day in day out was freaking annoying! And only caused me to game more because it was creatng a bad atmosphere in the house that I didn't want to participate in.

That was too funny. And this line killed me:

Haha "The sounds and movements Kaitlin makes are caused by random synapses firing In What's left of her brain tissue, in response to atmospheric changes, like, it being too cold in a restaurant, or her mother bursting into her room even though there's a little thing called privacy"...

"Assisted suicide" is actually legal in the state of Oregon (and Washington); not sure if the law has changed since I last learned about it while visiting. But it's not like just anyone can go and have it done. There is much more to it, of course.

that's sad. I have avoided getting a smart phone up to this point. I try to use my cell phone as little as possible by keeping it a pay per minute phone without any monthly charges.

I thought I was the last hold out. Even my brother has gone over to the dark side. But I agree with you 100pluspercent. I am not getting sucked into that. I actually have friends a bit pissed because I won't text. If they want me they can put down their texter and pic up their phone and talk. This is bullshit.

From what I've seen in real life, I doubt that pic is fake. It's a great picture. And even if you are often on the ocean, you just don't want to miss that. I was actually in a tiny dinghy--out between the boat, out of sight of the anchorage, and a reef I was headed to--one time when one like that came up right along side me. Coolest fucking thing ever. And I had a lot of really cool experiences on boats and under water. But that close to some random in the ocean whale has always stuck with me as one of my very favorite moments of life.

    I wasn't texting. I didn't miss it. I was right there.

With the extreme foreshortening of telephoto lenses, it's hard to tell how far from the whale he really was. It could have been a hundred yards.

But he might also have been controlling his quadcopter there, and getting some really great shots...

I was recently checking out some of the quads on youtube. I definitely would have bought one back in my teens or 20s. But now, well, not that it's totally gimmicky but I can't imagine using it more than once or five times for the thrill and then boxing it away to forget. Maybe I'll revisit when I'm even older and seeking out a new hobby.

A submarine one would be even more cool though. Maybe I'll just wait on that.

As to the pic, I think that's real and I found a thing with the photographer saying he'd gotten a few shots. That thing (or others) came up a couple of times but the guy never saw it. It's like that in the gay bars too now.

ABC News – by AVIANNE TAN
This Instagram photo shows a man missing a humpback whale surface two feet away from him because he was glued to his phone.

The moment was caught during a whale watch in Redondo Beach, California, professional photographer Eric Smith told ABC News today.

“A small private sailboat maneuvered really close to the whales, and this guy on it was literally sitting in that position and never moved,” Smith said. “He could have been texting his mom in the hospital for all I know, but I thought it sucked that he missed such a wonderful moment happening just two feet in front of him.”

Smith said he had about five photos of whales with the private sailboat in the background, but the guy never got off his phone in any of the pictures.

Texting while sailing around whales is like watching a Jacques Cousteau documentary with subtitles.
