Today I went to my first gay bar and first gay event.

It was a fundraising event for GLAAD and to celebrate all the accomplishments of the Chicago team this year.

It wasn't exactly what I was expecting. Most the guys just texted on their phones or talked to the people they came with.

But I walked up to groups of men and introduced myself and even left with a # (hey-yo).

I'm not normally a gay bar kinda guy but couldn't resist going to a bar for charity.

Did you guys do anything with gay charities this year or for the holiday season?

If you did, love to hear about your experiences.

    Hi there!

I am glad you gave yourself the chance to experience a new social venue. Does not matter whether you went "to get some dick", make friends, or "all of the above". The important thing is that you gave yourself a chance to interact and socialize with people through a venue other than just a bar or a club. As far as many people texting in their phones, I am not surprised to read that. This seems to be a common mode of communication nowadays. It has its pros and cons. Pros= quicker and far-reaching mode of communication; cons= can sometimes take away from face-to-face verbal communication between people. However you took the initiative to approach people. Awesome! Sounds like you are off to a good start!

Cool. I assume that you've never had sex with a guy though. Because there's nothing gayer than two dudes messing around.

Good for you! GLAAD and similar organizations, like HRC and purely local LGBT groups are great ways to network. Not just to get laid, but also to make friendships, and get career & employment leads. Plus if you formally join some of these charities it can look good on a résumé (just make sure you're not applying to Chick-fil-A or similar).

Last month my husband & I donated Thanksgiving turkeys to an HIV/AIDS food bank. We also played a principle role in an annual AIDS charity bike ride that raised over $1 million USD in November. Besides being a rider myself, we're both active in organizing & promoting the ride all year long, including countless fundraising events. We're active members in our local Pride Center, which is a non-profit that benefits our gay community in many ways.

We donate to HRC and Equality Florida, and attend their events. We donate money and material to a local HIV/AIDS thrift store. We attend fundraisers for women's causes, including an annual women's golf tournament (which we've both helped run, and in which I've more recently been a player, despite being a man). I walk in our local South Florida AIDS Walk. We also donate Christmas toys to children affected by AIDS, either because of parental infection or their own.

We do other non-gay charity work, too, but you specified gay, or in the case of HIV/AIDS, with a strong gay interest. Actually we've been cutting back a bit, mainly because of my husband's stroke and heart surgery, and my cancer. But charity work is our main "extra-curricular" activity, a luxury in time we can afford because we're retired.

But even a young man can find time to do things, and I encourage you to stay involved. It's a good habit to develop.

I remember when I was 19. I did my first gay thing for charity. I was living in Fort Lauderdale and doing volunteer work for "AIDS Center One". Fundraising work.

I used to go to a bar called "Boots" and collect money in a jug.

The staff a AIDS Center One gave me a funny look about the second or third month after I had been collecting money. One of them said something like, "What the fuck are you doing at Boots??? We've only been able to get $20-$30 out of that bar for quite some time and here you are all of a sudden bringing in $200-$300???"

I told them that if they weren't happy with my results, I could always stop. Nobody asked another question. Nobody said anything more, except "Thank you for volunteering".

I did my first gay thing for charity.

Sounds awesome! Glad you took the initiative! I've supported a number of gay charities and efforts over the last few years, not as much this year, I just had my focus set a little differently - I tend to support all kinds of charities and I gave time and money to several, including
a dog & cat charity and one called "strong kids" to the benefit of kids.
