I don't want to hear people shouting on their phone all the way through a long-haul flight. I think a reasonable compromise would be to allow texting throughout the flight and restrict voice calls to 1 hour after take off and 1 hour before landing.

This is a bad idea. The people that are usually glued to their cell phones often have the stupidest conversations about nothing. I certainly don't want to hear it on long flight.

surfing Grindr at high altitudes? Might meet someone on the plane.

    Could be good.

So basically "use of electronic devices in flight may cause interference" was some bullshit?

I travel a lot and hearing someone on the phone talk about inane bullshit while I'm flying across the country is not going to be fun. At All!

ugh, people are the worst. Most days I can barely even look at them, let alone hear them have inane conversations about nothing on a plane. Spare me. I mean, it's bad enough u have to smell their farts and deal with the way they look at u with their needy eyes wanting u to care about them. It's disgusting.

I say the answer should be no. Flying on a plane pretty much sucks. It should be a time of reflection and a time to examine the flaws of others. I dont wanna hear them talk on a phone about some recipe or some bullshit about their ugly offspring or anything else. Just no.

I'd hate it! Airlines aren't sure whether they will allow it, but if one starts all others will follow. I just hope the will charge an arm and a leg, so that people will think twice whether it's worth it.

not if us flight attendants have anything to do with it.
delta's ceo came out in full force yesterday saying that DL will NOT allow the use of voip or cell calls. they will be able to text or use the wifi, if the rules are relaxed. at my airline, i've been bombarded with customers saying, NO. so, lets see where the competitive chips fall. it just takes one. then they all follow. like lambs to the slaughter.

i can see it now, if allowed...

NO. on older aircraft, where the navigational electronics were not SHIELDED there was electromagnetic interference. in fact, if you place an iphone, on a call, near the nav aids on an airbus, you can still see the vdt wobble from the signal that is incoming. the main reason on the newer aircraft is limited bandwidth as most are ground based systems, and the other, most important reason, attention from the passengers during critical phases of flight. hope that helps.

If it's safe, why not? If there might be issues and they are being pressured by a consumer market obsessed with cellular usage then no.

Oddly enough it was during a flight as a kid that I picked up my first book and really got into reading. Which is my suggestion to most, grab a news paper or a book rather than your phone. Someone should think up and start a Flight Library to rent out books while inside the airport and on the flight for bored passengers. icon_biggrin.gif

Yup. Pilots use ipads for their flight logs these days. Also, consider all the people that pretend to turn off their devices during take off, which is probably half the plane. icon_lol.gif

I'd pay money now if cellphones were banned at the gym...especially in the cardio and stretching area.

We finally got a cellphone ban in our cubicle farm at work..

Now if I could do something about the almost retired oblivious guy who's pissed off about Duck Dynasty.

Do you want to risk hundreds of lives and a half billion dollar airframe to find out?

Your phone is going to max out its RF power at 35,000 feet to try to connect to any base station on the ground. Kills the battery. Cell networks typically operate at 800-900mhz for voice, LTE much lower.

It's much easier to protect equipment against WiFi interference at the higher freq of 2.4gHz.

Wow, I must have the patience of a saint. Cellphone conversations are really as not a big deal to me. But if they bother other people, I'll refrain on my flights from making calls.

I hope not! That sounds like a nightmare being stuck next to some deaf Chatty Cathy for a whole flight.

I am glad that I don't have to pretend like I turned off my electronics anymore though.
