A married, heterosexual gym teacher at a tony Upper West Side private school was fired because his lesbian supervisor disapproved of his “traditional family status,” the canned teacher claims in a new Manhattan lawsuit.

Gregory Kenney, 50, taught gym at the Trinity School on W. 91st St. for 16 years before he was let go in June 2012.

Kenney, who lives with his wife and three young children in LI, says he was a well-liked employee at the elite institution that counts Truman Capote, Ivanka Trump and Eric Schneiderman as alumni, until a gay athletic director named Pat Krieger took over in 2009.

Krieger allegedly forced him to coach three sports, even though his contract only required him to join two teams, according to his reverse discrimination suit.

When he complained that the extra responsibilities interfered with his family obligations Krieger allegedly told him, “We all make choices,” the suit says.

After Kenney told Krieger that he couldn’t keep working nights and weekends, she reported him to the headmaster “while a single, female teacher faced no scrutiny when she refused to coach a third season.”

Kenney claims the allegedly biased athletic director “routinely favored other single, younger females without children and discriminated against [him] because of his gender, sexual orientation, ‘traditional family status,’ and age.”

“He felt ostracized because of his family,” Kenney’s attorney, Steven Morelli told The Post in an interview.

“He had been doing this for so many years and he certainly did the job well or they would have gotten rid of him a long time ago,” Morelli added.

Kenney coached soccer, basketball and golf at Trinity, where tuition costs as much as $41,370 a year.

“On at least one occasion Kenney was dissuaded from attending social events with his peers because he was a heterosexual, married male with children, who wouldn’t fit in with [Krieger’s] ‘culture.’”

He says three other married coaches with young children were also sacked. Kenney was replaced by a gay female, according to court papers.

Kenney, who has 7-year-old twins and a 9-year-old, is still looking for a new job.

He’s seeking unspecified damages in the suit.

A spokesman for Trinity did not immediately comment.

(So please read the article first.)

The coach accuses the athletic director of discriminating against him because she wanted him to coach three teams instead of two... he claims the lesbian boss also fired other faculty with young kids who couldn't commit the weekend time.

I wonder who gets something like this on the cover of the Post. My guess is, it's the guy who is suing, trying to make a stink because 1) He just didn't like his new boss 2) She was changing/enforcing a school policy and making him work harder.

My guess is Trinity's athletics SUCKED and they poached St. John School's athletic director with some $$ and the chance to live in NYC. According to the St. John's site, this athletic director took a losing girl's basketball squad and turned them into champions.

I think if you have kids, they need to understand that during the season, coaching comes first.... isn't that the dilemma of every professional athlete, Broadway star, etc.? It takes time on the weekends, so, goodbye weekend.

NOW, TO BE FAIR, this new athletic director lady may be breaking the school's policy, which is (according to the coach) that a coach only needs to coach two teams. She's possibly doing this by forcing the coach to teach a third team and overextend himself.

But if I were the school, I'd back her. I think the fact she hired young lesbian coaches to "replace" the fired coaches is IRRELEVANT. How about SHITTY coaches vs. GREAT coaches? Coaches who GO THE EXTRA MILE and INSPIRE THE KIDS TO TRAIN HARD AND WIN?

WHY THE HECK does their SEXUAL ORIENTATION have anything to do with it?

Let's take a look at the fired coach's record... and the athletic record of the New Athletic Director's Previous School VS. Trinity's Athletic Record Before She Arrived.
Then we can begin to judge our society on MERIT like we are SUPPOSED TO.

IF indeed she fired a great coach via reverse discrimination SHE SHOULD BE FIRED. But IF she hired a BAD coach... or a LAZY coach... or an ENTRENCHED coach who did not fit in with the school's new athletic goals... I say, FUCK HIM and his HOMOPHOBIC SLANDER.

Schools like Trinity are HIGHLY SENSITIVE to diversity issues and their HR dept. is watching all this stuff carefully.

I look forward to seeing how this story plays out and I'm curious to see if this Mary Poppins is indeed a Cruella De Ville....or if this news story is just MORE OF THE SAME HATE.

    Ah ha.
I'm not siding with anyone but the reason he was fired was because his children allegedly were taking him away from his responsibilities... not because he was straight.

One sure way to analyze this objectively is to reverse the situation. Imagine if the boss were straight, and wanted only employees that he/she found attractive. The other details are incidental, used to justify actions taken. Of course, this can only work if you're interested in a fair and objective analysis.

For decades I've seen straight people with kids get a free pass to take time off to attend their soccer games and dance recitals while I, because I was gay and PRESUMABLY childless, was expected to work nights and weekends given no home life. I've seen the same expected of straight childless people, single and married.

I've also seen the majority of women regardless of orientation taking paid maternity leave (be they lawyers or secretaries) and never coming back to work as pre-planned, intentionally taking the money and running. The kid v. no-kid divide is patently unfair, particularly to those who WANT kids (who can be a comfort and support in old age) but for whatever reason don't have them.

If I had kids and I was treated any differently than my straight counterparts with kids I'd file suit.

Just because his boss was a lesbian doesn't mean she's discriminating based on orientation unless she treats all the other PRESUMABLY lesbian coaches (lol) with kids differently.

As for that coach, sorry buddy but contract or no contract we all gotta buckle down and do more to keep our jobs, particularly at a popular gig like working at a safe private school. Seniority is largely meaningless nowadays.

I think a lot of what he is claiming needs to be verified by the previous behavior of his boss. This case will not be decided for him based on just a 'he said, she said' defense. I can't imagine that the lawsuit was file unless they had some substantiated accusations to fall back on such as contract violation, previous mistreatment of other married men, unequal treatment between the men and the women, etc.

If he has a good case, I hope he wins. What's good for gays is equally as good for str8s. Just because he has a family doesn't mean that he should be treated any different. Sure it's a competitive job market and if he's failing to perform then there should be documentation by the school to back that, including reprimands and counseling, discussions of expectations, training opportunities and if there is, the school will surely present those. If they don't, I think he has a great case of discrimination.

This is interesting. He has a case indeed as the law against discrimination covers hetero and gay.

But then later, the school issued a statement, contained in this article. As well, there was something about illegally subletting a suite and leaving students unattended.

    An intriguing mystery.

Interesting addition. The courts will definitely hear this and unless they've documented these issues, I doubt they'll pull it off. Definitely an interesting case.
