New Mexico became the latest state to legalize gay marriage Thursday as its highest court declared it is unconstitutional to deny marriage licenses to gay and lesbian couples.

New Mexico's Supreme Court has ruled unanimously that same-sex marriage is legal, validating initiatives in several counties allowing the practice in the absence of a specific state law.

But since the Court's reasoning was that there was an absence of a specific state law barring gay marriage, will this prompt Republicans state lawmakers to PASS such a law? I'm willing to bet that's exactly what they'll now attempt.

thebearerofbadnews saidicon_cool.gif looks like gay marriage will be legal across the states BY the next presidential election.

Very doubtful. Too many blood-red states to change overnight. And many have enshrined homophobia in their State constitutions, which gives their State Supreme courts little or no latitude on the matter. And makes overturning them very difficult at the polls. Only the US Federal courts can declare a State constitutional amendment to be invalid and in violation of the US Constitution.
