Am I the only one who hates Christmas?

It seems like everywhere I turn there is 'CHRISTMAS' this and 'CHRISTMAS' that. The Christmas songs playing through the speakers at stores, every commercial on TV displaying the HOTTEST deals for the MUST HAVE holiday gifts...it is all too much to me. I want to pull a Scrooge or the Grinch and light a torch to this holiday season...anyone want to join?

I think the reason why some people dislike Christmas is because it's highly commercialized. It's no longer about the birth of a baby or being kind to one another; rather, it's about which popular gifts are trending annually.

Not being a Scrooge here as I love spending the holidays with my family, but prepping for Xmas is a huge chore, i.e. finding the right gifts to give.

Some of the Christmas myths in Europe also involve terrifying demons called Krampus that attack or eat badly-behaved children at this time of year. I think it is a cool antidote to the usual Coca-Cola Santa and presents for everyone dogma.

Xmas shopping is easy. Buy everyone really expensive laundry baskets. The ones that are kidney shaped with good handles. Everyone will bitch and whine about how stupid they are when they get them, and next year will beg you for another one. Trust me.

I'm a total Grinch bah-humbug so far as "Christmas" is concerned. Mostly this is due to being in retail sales/management for the past 30+ years. From my perspective, "Christmas" is a media driven insanity that infects just about everyone.

But there are other reasons, too. Beyond my doubts regarding Jesus' historicity, nothing in the Bible explicitly states his date of birth or that it was to be celebrated.

HOWEVER, The Winter Solstice *is* an actual, annual celestial event followed soon after by the date where the sun begins to move noticeably northward again as it rises and sets on the horizon (Dec 25). Thus, "the rebirth of the sun".

THAT, IMO, is something worth celebrating.

I don't celebrate holidays of beliefs I don't hold as truth. But I've no issue with someone else enjoying theirs. I'm not a Grinch. Keep your Christmas. Enjoy it in good health.

But to reduce my personal exposure to the overwhelming commercialization and exportation of it, beginning in November and increasingly from there, I avoid watching television (thank you internet/youtube for filling in that technogap) such that by late December I don't even turn my car radio on anymore, utilizing only the CD player.

Most stores are easy for me to avoid as I don't like shopping anyway. For food shopping I know just want I want before I enter the store and know where everything is so my exposure to xmas muzak is limited.

Yesterday I had to listen to some while shopping for a few bags of concrete at homodepot for a garden project. While. shopping. for. bags. of. concrete. Maybe this year I should buy myself some xmas ear buds for next season.

When mom was alive, I did used to take her out on xmas eve for a car tour of all the xmas lights with a dinner break for Chinese food, naturally, or whatever restaurant we ran into still open.

I sometimes fantasize relocating to a Buddhist country like Thailand where I like to imagine less Xmas would be thrown into everyone's face.

I don't hate Christmas. But as I get older, it becomes less of a big deal. Once you get your Red Rider BB gun, what else is there?

Blindness, or wearing an eye patch until you lose the other eye.
