No forum privileges until member is verified?

Thoughts on whether or not RJ forum privileges should only be granted to members (RJ members, not THAT member you pervs! icon_smile.gif )

In my view, most of the disruptive posts and comments come from unconfirmed accounts. One right wing type simply has a photo of a small dog and someone dressed as Santa as his photos. Most of his profile "info" says something about him having lost weight. (And of course he's unconfirmed)

    Thoughts?

Just for the record, if you click on the button at the top, right that reads "Who's verified", it lists 10,304.

The RJ verification process is a joke. Everyone uses the same thing on their piece of paper. More secure would be for each member to have a unique number on their piece of paper; trivial to set up on the web site. But even that is easy to fake if you have any photoshop skills. At best it might cut down on some of the noise.

And don't forget about the Ignore His Posts link under their picture. That's the easiest way to deal with the noise and losers.

We all know the verification system here is flawed. Well, most of us at least. And as Pazzy said, our more popular trolls are actually Verified members.

Here are my suggestions, based on rules implemented by other SUCCESSFUL and WELL RUN forums.

    - New members can't post in the forums for 30 days.

    - Add the ability to block/ignore "Hidden/Deleted" members.

    - Get rid of the Offline feature. I'm sure everyone is tired of seeing trolls abuse this feature.

    - Add "Ignore This Thread" feature.

    - Create a separate sub-forum only accessible with paid membership.

    - Usernames are permanent. Can't change it on a whim. Want a new one? Then email the admim.

    - Mods should merge duplicate news threads. This will cut down on the 100 hundreds of new threads that get created every time a celebrity dies or whenever Beyonce has a new album. icon_rolleyes.gificon_lol.gif

Its not a bad idea but this forum is already pretty dead as is. Forcing members to be verified will just transform this whole forum board into a ghost land.

I just suspect that there are a lot of members who are not only straight, but homophobic.

Too many comments not only against marriage equality, but also saying we shouldn't "flaunt it", etc. Granted there are a lot of self-loathing types, and that might explain some of them. But some of these guys, a fairly high number of them I suspect, are clearly homophobic trolls.

I just think it would help if RJ stopped being a place where it's widely known that anyone can set up an account and jump right into the forum.

I've wondered that since I joined RJ. I quickly noted that the number posting who are hostile to gay interests (and therefore presumably to their own interests) was far higher than I had encountered on other gay social sites. It simply didn't make sense.

There's even one rabid Republican who openly says he's straight, or as a more recent alternative, a "pansexual" whatever the hell that is. But in any case he isn't gay, and he isn't friendly to most gay issues, so you do have to wonder what his motivation is to be here, other than irritate & proselytize for the Right Wing.

I've seen photoshopped verified on here where they didn't even bother adding a finger in front of the sign like it's glued to their hand.

I'm pretty sure I'm me so never bothered to photoshop a verification of myself.

I use the ignore click liberally with probably more than 150 clicks by now. I like the no moderating but without the ignore click I'd find this site to be intolerable and I did leave once before ignore was featured.

The ignore could be improved. It should work on hidden/deleted profiles, including those long dead profiles. Ignore should also blank from view quoted materials of the ignored.

I'm pretty good at averting my eyes to crap I don't care to see. But when there's so much crap that can't be placed onto ignore, it takes too much energy to continually avert your eyes to the energy sucking horseshit.

And then the experience of this website turns to shit.

And what about the passive-aggressive "left wing type" who posts topic after topic in support of Democratic and liberal causes. Those who don't drink the "left wing" Kool-Aid find those posts "disruptive" to borrow a word from you.

What you are advocating is shutting out opinions that, in general, you disagree with and specifically, that are not the typical gay-Democratic-lieral line.

It's clear the site owner is hostile to such views, as he only allows a handful of accounts to post from the conservative-right point of view, while other accounts that attempt to advocate the conservative-right point of view are quickly deleted.

Now watch, my account will soon be deleted by the site owner.

I've always felt the best verification on these online social sites is to meet in person. That's what I've always tried to do, and I've done the same on RJ.

Of course I can't meet everyone, but if enough guys with good verified reputations of their own say they've met me, and confirm me to be genuine as advertised in my profile, then Photoshopping is no longer a question.

thebearerofbadnews saidhonestly.... as crazy as this sounds, anybody in here that want to group up and make another real jock forum that's BETTER than this one???

They already have. They get together whenever someone posts things they don't like and complain to the site owner, who then deletes the account.

VERIFIED member "disrupting" the site by posting nastiness to another member. If anything, this proves that requiring everyone be verified does not get you any closer to the goal of not having "disruptive comments" in the forums.

I agree with most of your suggestions, but not sure about this one. It might lower the amount of trolls, but it would likely also deter legit members. For me, many of the forums I have joined over the years started with finding an interesting conversation I wanted to contribute to. If I had to wait 30 days to post, I would have probably lost interest and moved on long before the 30 days were up.

Well, that's kinda what I was thinking. If a person truly wanted to contribute and be part of a community, then they can wait. There are way too many drive by postings here. It's like random people find this site from googling. They create an account, ask a question (usually one that's been asked 100x before), and once they get their question answered, they never come back.

Some people just cannot handle the fact that not everyone will agree with them, and sit cheerfully in their little comfort zone. So much for being open minded. Quite childish, really.
Since you brought up my weight loss, sadly, it's on hold. I got injured in my Krav Maga class, so I haven't exercised in two and a half weeks. Sitting around, I did cheat, and the holidays are among us, but I'm not giving up. As soon as I am able, I will resume my exercise routine and Krav Maga classes. Just thought I'd share this with anyone who might care, and this is a fitness website.

    Step 4

Submit your selections for review by clicking the "Submit" button at the bottom of this page.

We'll review the verification photo and match it against the profile photo you selected. If your verification photo includes a handwritten sign that reads "RealJock 123" and it matches the face photo you chose from your profile, we'll mark you as a verified member. Please allow up to 48 hours for your verification photo to be reviewed.

Remember, if the profile photo you selected in Step 3 is ever removed from your profile, your verified status will be revoked.

Again, the verification system here is dumb. Because this site doesn't enforce the other pictures you can upload to your profile. All pics are supposed to be of you. But from browsing profiles, you can pretty much upload anything/everything except pics of yourself.

That's how we have so many Verified fakes. They first upload a legit pic of themselves with the Realjock 123 sign. Once they get verified, they set that pic to Private. And then upload stolen pics to their public album and pretend to be someone else.
