Last week I watched a good bit of the Sound of Music 2013. Tonight, the original is on. Let me tell you, the original is great. The cinematography is great. The artistry in the '65 is tops.

The 1965 version is a classic.

Who doesn't prefer the 1965 movie? However, compared to the original 1959 stage version/2013 broadcast the 1965 movie's a bit dumbed down. For example, I much prefer the 1959/2013 baroness, a wealthy businesswoman who was far more complex with practical business ethics, and how it was their political differences/approach to life that broke her and Captain Von Trapp up, not the simplistic love triangle of the movie, and how the baroness after recognizing the threat that was Maria was secure enough to choose to do nothing, so that Maria left for the abbey after being told the Captain loved her not by a manipulative female rival but by one of his perceptive, on-board children. Also, the two songs cut from the movie were probably axed because they were too clever, not "unmemorable."

Relatedly...when I happened to first tune in on this scene:

forget about making play clothes from drapes, I couldn't help but notice that Maria's and Liesl's dresses looked like they were made of circa 1965 office furniture upholstery:

Like a Patsy Cline song, some originals should never be copied.

The original left such an indelible mark on the world that TRYING to copy it is a futile effort.

    Eagermuscle,

Great comments. Thanks for helping me see what I thought I saw: different scripts to a certain extent.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. The film just made the colors look better back then.

Sorry to obsess, but I can't believe that the first smart outfit they let Maria wear after her bridal gown looked like a psychiatrist's sofa.
