Wear anything under running tights?

I live in a cold part of the U.S. and like to run outside every day. Running tights are by far the most comfortable thing to wear in cold weather. I don't like wearing them more than once without washing if I go commando. But anything I put on underneath shows through and looks ridiculous.

Any suggestions? All the other guys I see running around in tights (and fortunately there are many!) seem to have it figured out. There's not an underwear line in sight.

I'm wondering what you're wearing underneath them. If your tights are black and your underwear are black then at most I'd think you'll just see an outline. If your underwear are trunk briefs or boxer briefs, perhaps regular no leg briefs would show less. Also, how thick are your tights? I have some that are sort of a fine mesh, which I think of as what I'd wear under something else. Then I have some compression tights which are opaque.

You could also wear running shorts over your tights.

I bought my first running tights in Montreal back in 1999 when I moved to Plattsburgh, NY (aka "Montreal's U.S. suburb"). At the time the guy in the running store told me that tights were not meant to be worn with anything under them. Since then I sometimes wear the tights as is and sometimes wear running shorts over them if I'm feeling self-conscious.

I just purchased my first set of "wind briefs" to be worn under a new pair of tights that I bought at the same time at my local running store in Duluth, MN. Haven't tried them out yet as I've been travelling a lot in recent weeks to warmer climes but come January I'll see what all this hullabaloo about wearing stuff under tights is all about...

I have these winter cycling pants that I wear for running too in the winter time and I wore a polar base layer under that yesterday for a 5K run because it was -18F with the wind chill. That kept me really warm without sweating.

Highly recommend wearing a layer underneath tights. I live in California now, so no need, but have done a lot of running in Iowa and Boston.

Once you get frostbite down there once, you never, ever let it happen again...

As I have something of a Scottish bum (i.e. big), I hate wearing tights, but tend to have to resort to it in cold weather. I always wear something underneath it - its too revealing otherwise! I just hope I've not got a VPL!!

I wear briefs or squarecuts with the thinnest leg bands that don't leave lines, or a jock. If they see a line, that's hot, but hopefully I'll be running so fast no one can see that level of detail.

I wear briefs under my running tights. I don't see any problem with it.

Briefs work just fine. You can only see the outline, plus they keep everything together and better insulated for those harsh winter runs icon_cool.gif
