I had the Flu since last Thursday. I had high fever for two days, and today my head feels very congested. I am a total mess, I feel like shit! in the interim I miss my weight training one hour sessions every other day since November 1, 2013! I went to the Gym today but felt too weak to complete my one hour workout.

How do you deal with getting back on the weight training routine after a nasty Flu/cold? your personal suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Clearly, you need more rest. Your body's not ready for the stress and strain of exercise.
I've been through this before too when you get cabin fever from a flu or surgery and you think you're ready to go back, but can't make it past 20 mins before you feel like you have the Flu again.
Stay home and rest! Rent some movies and hibernate like a winter bear for another week or so.
Also, take it really slow when you go back or you can have a relapse in this weather!

My dear friend I am usually good remembering names, unfortunately right now my head feels too congested to even think straight! I will definitely take your advice and take it slow! thanks again sweetie. Peace and Love to you and your love ones on this holiday season.

I'm there now...today was my first day back excising after over two weeks of the plague. It really does feel like I've been set back years -- no strength and even less wind. Hitting the weights a little and just walk-through cardio felt more like rehab / physical therapy than training. icon_sad.gif

I don't know if there's anything for it but to get back into the regimen slowly and never get sick again.

You should definitely go easy on yourself after not working out for awhile, especially if it was because you were ill. Overexerting yourself can have a negative effect on your immune system; it can make you more vulnerable to a different/existing strain of flu/cold/other viruses.

The best you can do is to find a new point of exertion when working out that you are comfortable with. This usually takes three sessions for me - during the first session at the gym after a long period of absence, I try to do what I used to be able to do until I feel sufficiently tired and sore. For the second session (usually 48 hours after the first), I deliberately do less reps/sets (sometimes even lighter weights) and make the workout really easy in general. For the third session, I modify my workout to be right in between what i did for the first session and the second session in terms of the level of intensity, and maintain that level of exercises until I feel ready to challenge myself again.

Just be ready to accept that you will not be able to do what you used to be able to do without overexerting yourself and compromising your overall health. Be patient with yourself and give yourself lots of time to return to your original level of fitness.
