Apparently Rick Perry, that good Old Republican, disagrees with the usual chorus in here that hate crime laws are dumb.

" Mr. Perry said today, ''This law sends a signal to would-be criminals that if you attack someone because of their religion or race or gender, you face stiffer penalties.'"

And now a little justice is served:

...and apologies for this topic being in the main forum. I started it in the politics one, but wasn't given the drop-down to select the appropriate forum.

Among the drop-down categories was one of the selections to pick a fight?

I don't know how current is the info on the following (the last press release is dated Nov 2011), but I just thought I'd throw it into the ring...

The Texas James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Act, passed in 2001, provides enhanced penalties for hate crimes motivated by a victim’s race, religion, color, sex, disability, sexual preference, age, or national origin. Though the Act includes provision for crimes of bias based on “sexual preference,” it currently does not include bias crimes motivated by gender identity and expression. Additionally, Texas has yet to see an effective implementation and enforcement of the Hate Crimes Act.

and I'm actually feeling a little grumpy this morning. I think it's the overcast day. I don't know how people in Seattle survive it.
