Just stumbled onto this article about a study which found that bee venom destroys the HIV virus while leaving surrounding cells unharmed.

Nanoparticles loaded with been venom kill HIV

Mmm. Getting stung to death doesn't seem like much of a cure.

The idea is not to use this discovery as any form or cure or treatment since the effect of the venom is limited to viral copies OUTSIDE cells. In HIV infected individuals, the virus replicates primarily within their CD4 cells as well as integrating into the host's genome.

The application would be an additional preventative measure that could be used with or without condoms just like spermacidal gels currently available. It may also prove beneficial for serodiscordant couples (one positive an one negative partner) in reducing the likelihood of transmission more effectively than condoms alone.

I think the most promising aspect of such technologies, depending on how effective they prove to be, would be reducing then stigma HIV positive individuals face vis-a-vis fear of transmission to negative partners.

Bee venom has a host of really interesting things in it. It's interesting how many drugs are being developed from venom in general. Venom is a wonderful thing in small doses lol.
