Why do people love, or hate, these actors?

These actors have huge fan bases, are box office gold most of the time, and are beloved by millions. But there are just as any who would hang them from the nearest highway overpass (figuratively speaking - I hope) if they could. Are millions of fans wrong? The haters? What gives? I honestly don't have a good answer.... And all of these actors are, at least in common knowledge, straight. I can't really come up with a highly successful gay actor who has a large group of haters, (other than of the homophobic variety).

I don't think they're disliked because of their sexuality. Rather, their names have become household items because of the blockbuster movies they were in. Such as Leo who will be forever be known in Titanic and Hayden in the Star Wars movies.

I think the main reason why they're hated is because their acting abilities are not convincing. Tom Hanks is perhaps the only decent actor you posted. And I don't understand why Josh Harnett would be hated. I haven't seen him in a movie since Pearl Harbor.

Unimpressive acting, too much hype & ego. You can't sell a Yugo as a Rolls Royce and not expect people to be turned off.

But I agree with you that Tom Hanks doesn't fall into that category. He really is a solid & versatile actor, and he's won all kinds of Golden Globes and 2 Academy Awards back-to-back for acting. Those aren't flukes, that few men in history have done (only Spencer Tracy also winning the Oscar twice in consecutive years).

And I kinda like Orlando Bloom. Whether he's playing a pointy-eared elf in the Tolkien movie franchise, a weasely prince in Troy, or trying to look serious opposite the impossibly eccentric Johnny Depp in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies.

I've had the biggest crush on Hayden -- such pretty cheek bones. He looks kind of young there. Once you're mainstream everyone is going to have an opinion. I agree --except for Tom Hanks and maybe Bloom-- the actors have been accused of playing similar roles or people say they don't have an ability to act.

I don't care for Tom Cruise; I feel like in every movie he has this intense personality. During interviews I actually like him and find him personable.

I liked Leo in Man with the Iron Mask. I don't think he's a bad actor -- maybe guys don't like the fact he's pretty?

You guys are insane, Hanks is an excellent actor, diCaprio is very good as well and I have to say Cage is good.

I can't say the others suck either but wouldn't put them on the same level

We all said Hanks is a good actor. Cage is always a goody two shoes, but my mother likes him a lot. I enjoy several of his films.

Agree, as I wrote above. Consider his work:

He plays the dying lawyer in Philadelphia, wins the Best Actor Oscar. The next year he completely transforms himself to be the simple-minded Forrest Gump, and wins another Oscar.

He was a goofy 13-year-old in an adult's body in Big, brought Apollo 13 back from disaster, led the combat mission in Saving Private Ryan, talked to a soccer ball in Cast Away, was Sleepless in Seattle, and voiced several Disney animated movies. If that's not versatile I don't know what is.

My opinion on all of these (not that anyone should care):

Keanu Reeves: he's just terrible at acting
Nicolas Cage: I really like him! His films are mostly bad but he is totally bonkers. Con Air was such an unintentionally funny film. "Put the bunneh back in the box" or whatever it was - lol!
Hayden Christensen: no worse than Mark Hamill really. He was ok in Revenge of the Sith (which is really underrated generally)
Tom Hanks: I find his films too "worthy" and boring. I liked his comedies in the 80s
Leonardo DiCaprio: I think most people like him now. He kind of lost his looks which worked out quite well for his serious acting career
Josh Hartnett: He's fine at what he does, but they are not really my type of film. He might work on more interesting things as he gets older, like Ethan Hawke did
Orlando Bloom. Perfect for kids films. Would like to see him do something more gritty.

Seconded. I actually like Keanu even though he isn't a good actor. Not sure why I like him, exactly. I seem to sense a vulnerability in him. Whether that is true or not I have no idea. On the other hand I've never really liked Hanks even though he is a good actor. I think somehow his Forest Gump just irked me so much I've never been able to separate him from it.

I believe Keanu Reeves has rocked every role he has been given. Should he have been given better roles? Probably. But every role he has been given, he put his heart and soul into. There's a reason The Matrix movies made billions, and it was largely his doing. Neo was a very compelling character. He always rejected the reverence he received as The One. He was never comfortable with it. When it turns out he's right, and The One's abilities are just another form of control, he does the unexpected.

And much earlier in his career... Lets face it, we all wanted to be on that motorcycle in River Phoenix's place in My Own Private Idaho. Well, at least until he turned into an asshole at the end. Ted "Theodore" Logan, in the Bill and Ted movies, corny role, nobody expected those movies to succeed like they did. But he rocked it. Johnny Utah? The only things worth watching in Point Break were him and Swayze. The moppy-haired, sex-charged teen in Parenthood stole many a scene. "That is one messed up little dude!"

He could have been given better roles, fair enough. But he played them all to a T.

The Constantine film was shambolic, and a waste of a great bisexual comic book character.

    The really important measure:

    1. Keanu Reeves - I would fuck him.
    2. Nicolas Cage - I would let him fuck me.
    3. Hayden Christensen - I would snap his jammies and tuck him in at night.
    4. Tom Hanks - I would let my sister fuck him.
    5. Leo di Caprio - I would have him fuck my worst enemy.
    6. Josh Hartnett - I would keep him locked in my basement for my constant personal use.
    7. Orlando Bloom - I would let him be my butler.

I think that topic made some great points, but the run-on threads and quotes got really old.

    lol

I still stand by what I said about ALL the SNL fat guys except for Belushi and Farley - as unfunny as root canal, especially Kenan Thompson, whose mugging leads one to think he's his biggest fan.
