It's currently -31C (-23F) here in the outskirts of Toronto. It'll be -34C (-30F) tomorrow morning... yikes! This snow storm is supposed to miss us but it's too close to call as 20 minutes (driving) away they are to get 20-40 cm (7-15 inches).

Stay safe everyone! Shoveling the snow is a great workout btw icon_smile.gif! Plus I have a snowboarding trip planned on Saturday so fresh powder is great!

3 inches of snow permits a state of emergency? I guess it must be relative to what a region is used to.

Hell, we can often have 12 inches of snow in one day and life drudges on. I just finished shoveling over 20 inches of heavy, wet snow off my roof. We have to work, go to school, run errands. The temp can easily fall into the -30 celcius.

    Stay warm. icon_smile.gif

I think Gov. Christie declared it in advance of the totality of the storm. We got a total just east of Philly of 6 inches. Wind is now picking up and blowing the powder around. A state of emergency prohibits vehicles from being on road except essential drivers so it allows the road crews to operate effectively. State of emergency declared in NJ and NY currently.

I don't miss all of that back there!! Talked to my father in Collingswood,NJ- close to 7 inches of snow and temperatures are in the teens. Meanwhile here in the Bay Area, Highs will be in the 60s with sunshine.

This is nothing today. Having lived in Chicago and then last winter here, we're ready for far more than this. Of course, my colleagues who drive to work are all working remotely today - PUSSIES!

Yeah, this isn't really too bad. Shops are open in NYC. No need for pantry stocking.

I'm right in the middle of Long Island right now and the roads aren't that bad. It'll take me an hour or so to clear my driveway when I get home. Welcome to winter is right, but I hate winter to no end. We have two more months of this shit.

Four reported deaths so far including this bizarre one in Morrisville PA (outside Phila) - never heard of this ever before:

MAN DIES UNDER PILE OF SALT

The salt, which is used to keep roads clear of snow and ice, fell on the man at the International Salt facility at New Ford Mill Road and Bordentown Road in Morrisville, Bucks County, Pa. around 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Falls Township Police told NBC10.

Police said the man was moving rock salt with a front-end loader when the 100-foot tall mineral pile toppled over, burying the machine and trapping him inside.

Several emergency crews were dispatched to the scene of the industrial accident and firefighters used shovels to find the man. When they finally reached the machine, the man was already dead, still sitting in his seat, police said.

The man's death comes as many Southeastern Pennsylvania municipalities and state road crews prepared to deal with a winter storm that is expected to bring several inches of snow and frigid temperatures.

If y'all came into my backyard, you'd see over 7 inches and patches of snow here and there....

Well of course you have; you've just forgotten. Though, granted, it doesn't happen often...

Hopefully we will miss the worst of this new years noreaster here in Buffalo. It is already very cold with highs in the single digits today but tomorrow and sunday the highs will be pushing near 40 degrees. But next week it will plummet back down to the low teens.

Damn we just had 42 inches fall, and we were all out on the streets shopping, had work, and life went on almost as normal, just a bit slower.. Regional humor in Philly I guess.

Here's good reasoning for living in California. No snow here, blue skies, upper 60s today. We desperately need some snow in the mountains so us low landers will have water to shower with next year!

Yeah but Buffalo doesn't count, you guys have snow 365 days out of the year! I'll bet you shovel your walk more than you mow your lawn! LOL

That's stupid bullshit. Buffalo does not get snow 365 days of the year. We have a beautiful four season climate just like the rest of the northern US. That was a very idiotic and irresponsible statement on your particon_mad.gif

I thought I heard that the "State of Emergency" was some kind of hack into the NWS... wasn't it later recanted/rescinded/redacted or something?
