WTF? Rufas Wainwright Doesn't Care About Gay Marriage

I was a fan of Rufus Wainwright until I read this. I don't think the 18,000 gay couples that got married in California would be thrilled about comparing this to marriage with a dog?!?

How do you react when activism is nullified, like when the same-sex marriage law was reversed in California?

Oddly enough, I’m actually not a huge gay marriage supporter. I personally don’t want to get married but I think that any law or amendment to the constitution that deals with sex and love should just be banned in general. I don’t think any government should encroach on what goes on in the bedroom at all. Frankly, if you want to marry a dog, why don’t you go ahead and marry a dog, I don’t care. I’m a complete libertarian and so I really disagree with it.

There are a lot of gay people and even allies who don't believe in gay marriage. Bette Midler got in hot water for some comments about this. Gays don't all agree about marriage. I may disagree with him, but he's entitled to his opinion.

I think his statement has less to do with gay marriage than it has to do with marriage in general.
Although, I bet he might feel different if one day he wants to get married.

I have to say, aside from his views, I can only take a few songs of his before I can't listen to anymore. His voice is too whiny to me and his music is often very depressing!

That's just the libertarian party's stance. You know how some people think that just because they're of a certain party affiliation they're obligated to believe everything the party believes. No deviation. Funny, that's the same way it is with some of the fans of gay artists. Just because the guy's gay, they think they have to be big time groupies of his. I've never liked his music regardless of his sexuality, and while I support him as a person and a talented musician (even good in the eyes of some people). I choose not to actively support him by buying cds, mp3s or attending concerts.

He said that he personally doesn't want to get married but doesn't support legislation that discriminates. What is the problem?

While I agree with everyone, on that weather or not he supports gay marriage is his opinion. One which he's entitled to. I'm offended that he would compare gay marriage to bestiality... It's like comparing it to pedophilia. What if he would have said "Frankly, if you want to marry a 9 year old, why don’t you go ahead and marry a 9 year old, I don’t care." you wouldn't have been offended? It's hard enough fighting off the image that we're all sick perverts without people supposedly 'speaking out' for us, to put us back in the hole. If you ask a straight homophobe what he thinks of when you say 'gay' or 'homosexual'. Most common comparisons are to pedophilia and bestiality. How are we going to fight that kind of trash off?

It's the bestiality comment which, as Cadoimond pointed out, is something that is often compared to homosexuality as a way of dehumanizing us and making us repulsive. I highly doubt that Rufus meant it in this capacity but rather as hyperbole to show his disdain for marriage as a whole, but given the history of "First men can get married; next you'll be allowed to marry your dog"-type arguments it wasn't a wise choice on his part.

This is beyond just the gay marriage issue

The Right has declared War on Homosexuality and is using this issue as their weapon of Mass Destruction
Whether you are For Gay Marriage per say or not as a homosexual man you must say yes to it at least for now
