Can you guys tell me anything that has worked for you to help get rid of your winter cold?
Last year, Roguewave told me about Zicam Ultra. It's a nice helper, but I'm wondering if there's anything you guys swear by,
to make you feel better sooner?
EDIT... Sorry guys, the day after I wrote this, I found out why my Cold meds weren't working. It was Tamiflu and a Codeine Cough Syrup that was needed all along.

Antihistamine to dry up the mucus and a painkiller/fever-reducer to make you feel better. Usually I'm able to completely ignore my colds that way and they are over a lot faster.

    Jose Cuervo; preferable "Gold".

6 to 12 shots depending on tolerance, taken with Coors Original, no less than a six.
Once you recover from the hang over--what cold symptoms?

I have many cures and they work fantastic.

INTENSE CARDIO: This one works the best, but you have to do it the minute you feel the first symptoms. Once you get a fever this probably won't work. At the first sign of a sore throat or itchy/watery eyes, put on your running shoes and run as fast as you can for 15-20 minutes. Do this on an empty stomach, or after a cup of coffee or green tea at the most. (Drink all the water you want of course.) This will kick your immune system into overdrive. 90% of the time when I do this, the moment I step off the treadmill, all symptoms are magically GONE.

HORSERADISH: I normally get a dozen raw oysters and eat them with lots of horseradish. The oysters digest very quickly and taste great with the horseradish. Then I take two Benedryl and go to bed. I wake up the next day and I'm fine.

BENEDRYL: I honestly have no idea why this works so well for me but it does. Maybe it just knocks me out so I can rest, but 2 Benedryl makes me sleep solid for 10 hours and I wake up feeling like I never had a cold, although a bit groggy.

GREEN TEA: There is something about this stuff that shortens the life of my colds. I always use honey and lemon with mine. If my throat is really sore, I use extra honey to coat it.

SALT WATER: I gargle with warm salt water every time I go pee. I just keep the glass on the sink and gargle each time I enter the bathroom.

NETI POT: This one is very important. This thing will keep all that nasty shit out of your sinuses. I can't stress enough how important this one is. I get the water pretty hot. Test it by pouring a bit over your finger. If it's not too hot for your finger, it's not too hot for your sinuses. (Use distilled water only!) Tap water in the sinuses is very dangerous.

Don't think this is available in the US, but it's kind of miraculous when a cold is just starting. It's this gross oily substance that comes in a little glass vial.

You can do all the stuff mentioned above and your cold will probably last about seven days.

If you don't do it, it your cold will probably last about a week.

This because everyone's immune response is different so there is no definitive way to make a cold go away faster. Simply put...rest up, wash hands frequently and drink plenty of fluids.

Erik, I think you are right. There is just no getting around keeping yourself healthy so that you can deal with colds when they happen.

I do however think that Grandma's hot toddy can be very comforting: Juice of a lemon, good spoonful of sugar or, better yet, honey, a good sprinkle of ground ginger, stir in some hot water and then a solid dose of bourbon. Sip slowly and go to bed immediately after finishing.

That sounds like an awesome concoction, especially the bourbon! Your reply post has been saved for future drink recipes. icon_smile.gif

    Boom: Cold/flu dramatically reduced.

Garlic tea. Take a clove or two, chop it up, boil water, put the chopped garlic in your glass, pour in the water, put in the teabag, let it steep but not so long that it's no longer fairly hot, and drink. A second glass 12 hours or so later is probably a good idea.

If your cold is in the early stages and you haven't yet started sneezing a lot, you may almost immediately start sneezing a lot. This is good because what's happening is that the cold is going through you quickly. In 24 hours, you will feel much better (if it works for you as it has for me).

As far effectively for me :

warm Honey Lemon + fresh Ginger juice does wonders for me.

Or just Hot honey lemon will do the trick. + a stick of cinnamon bark will do goo too.icon_cool.gif

*trust me on this...I try to avoid tablets and all and try my best to go with natural remedies by food. It is not entirely encouraging to take on tablets unless it is necessary.

OKay get well soon Tony icon_wink.gif

I take it that you didn't get the flu shot? Hm, my sister in law is having this winter cold on and off now. Anyway, she's taking some over the counter cold medicines remedy! I notice she eats a lot of hot soup (like Pho, Noodle) for examples to calm her down! Take warm hot shower, eat garlic/ginger more? Drink lots of Lemonade (lol always work for me) !! If all fails, get yourself to a doctor and take some emergency vaccines/medicine asap!!

Have tried and failed a few times to get rid of a cold faster, it really just takes time and rest. Prevention on the other hand is easier, if you drink a lot of citrus throughout the year, it really helps build up your defense.

In most cases, you can treat the symptoms of cold yourself at home using a number of self-care techniques.

    • Drink plenty of fluids to replace those lost
    • Get plenty of rest
    • Eat healthily: a low-fat, high-fibre diet, including fruit and vegetables

I always use Steam inhalation, which involves sitting with your head over a bowl of hot water. Place a towel over your head, close your eyes and breathe deeply. Avoid getting the hot steam in your eyes.

Forgot to add, do not go to the gym, a workout will make you worse, despite itching to train, rest, you will feel much better than going to the gym, making your cold worse and having a shit workout.
