Even sadder because it's barely getting any coverage at all... I mean it hasn't even been mentioned on these forums... yet Gov. Blogojewhatever seems quite a popular topic...

    Edit:
I decided to change the title... maybe this will get a few more votes...

From the article, there isn't much chance of catching these thugs cause there's very little evidense of who they were. god this is pathetic when people are this sick to kill for no reason at all. i hope they are caught and spend their lives in jail.

(For crying out loud. The story you reference was publised on 13 DEC at 11:04 PM, days after the Blagojevich controversy broke out.)

This is truly a sad event and the saddest thing is that his mother couldn't make it in time to see him alive.

It's disgusting how blind the media is
If you're a white mother who kills their baby you get off the wall coverage
or if you're a democrat crook then they'll go through your dirty underwear hamper with gusto
But be a gay man killed with a baseball bat?

From reading the story, it doesn't even sound like the guy was gay. He was walking arm and arm with his brother and he has two kids back in Ecuador. It sounds like he was killed for being gay when he wasn't even gay. Sad story indeed.

Walking arm and arm with your brother is anti American family values. Had these two brothers been in a knock down drag out fistfight and these schmucks came along, they'd have taken them to a bar for a drink.

yes, sad to say...this sort of thing has been going on for a while...and doesn't get much media coverage if any at all.

Can't be sure of course, but it sounds like the work of skinheads out to earn some "points"...the type of attack, the way it went down....spells skinheads wanting to earn their red shoelaces. Pathetic.

Before they disallowed gay to get married. Now they are killing gays. What next. I probably come from a consertive deeply religious country but they dont kill man for holding hand together. A lot of immigrant do that here. Some straight guys got disgusted over it, but cant do much about it.

What a horrible display of humanity... I'm basically out of words to even comment further.

Hopefully, with the reward offered, the perp. will be caught. I believe in the death penalty - especially for cases like this. If he gets life, let's hope somebody will repeatedly beat the shit out of HIM. Let him see how it feels.

The attack seemed to be motivated by Jose' race as well his supposed gayness. Now you have two fatherless children!

They always attack in packs and have weapons. Try kicking our ass going toe to toe...mano y mano! Putos!icon_evil.gif

    The ass wipes!icon_twisted.gif

What I don't understand is how a crooked politician from Chicago even qualifies as news at all! I mean, hello? icon_rolleyes.gif

"The attackers jumped out of the car and smashed a beer bottle over Jose Sucuzhanay's head, hit him in the head with an aluminum baseball bat and kicked him, police said"

I would expect this in the south, where ignorant rednecks and violence against anything different is pretty common. But something like this happening in NYC is shocking. What gets in the head of someone who thinks they'll get their kicks by randomly attacking and killing someone they think is just a little too different? What makes people think they can enforce their views of how society should be by wielding a baseball bat on someone's head?

And, as ignorance is reactive and not rational, it turns out that they were probably wrong about him being gay, too. He has two kids back home in Ecuador and the man he was walking with was his own brother.

Somehow we've developed a culture that has too little appreciation for cultural diversity and too much emphasis on enforcing moral norms by vigilante means. Wonder where that came from?

And by the way, welcome to RealJock, skifan08. icon_cool.gif

Sadly, this wasn't the first time an Ecuadorian man was killed in New York. Another man, Marcello Lucero, was murdered in Long Island by 7 attackers.

Ok. This is what the Catholic Church was condoning. I hope they rot in hell.

Does New York include gays in Hate Crime legislation?

There was also another gay man killed in Syracuse, New York just last November. This one involving young guys, and the victim this time was really gay (a 'flamer' to be more precise, which is probably why he attracted attention to his sexuality):

    http://www.syracuse.com/news/index.ssf/2008/11/syracuse_man_was_killed_for_be.html

SYRACUSE, NY - Dwight R. DeLee shot and killed Moses "Teish" Cannon with a .22-caliber rifle Friday night because he didn't like that Cannon was openly gay, Syracuse police said.

Cannon, 22, and his brother, Mark Cannon, 18, both of 404 Arthur St., were shot as they sat in a car parked in front of 411 Seymour St., where they had been invited to a party. The bullet grazed the left arm of Mark Cannon, who was in the driver's seat, and hit Moses Cannon in the chest, police said.

Police have charged DeLee, 20, of 420 Gifford St., with second-degree murder. DeLee went into the home at 411 Seymour St. to get the rifle after guests at the party started "making profane and vulgar comments in regards to the sexual preference of our two victims," police Chief Gary Miguel said.... (Click on the link to read more)

Also read the comments on that article. What is sadder are the people who try to justify that it wasn't a hate crime and even taking Dwight's side.

EDIT: Moses was actually transgender, he went by the name 'Teish'. A straight girl, in all senses.

Since gay bashing is based on a viciously homophobic individual's perception of who is gay, even straight men who are in the wrong place at the wrong time can get gay bashed, as this profoundly sad case shows. Gay bashers are the brownshirts of sexuality who police the margins, and like any mob they can be indiscriminate in whom they actually attack. I know I'm preaching to the choir here, but homophobia hurts everyone--straight men and women included.

To play the devils advocate here is there clear evidence he was even gay?

I mean to be honest gay slurs are pretty common and can be used anywhere. The news article does mention he had children in Ecuador.

Crimes happen everyday sadly. Drowning your own children and corrupt governors getting hauled in by the Feds is not an everyday happening.

Actually, he wasn't gay - the man he was with was his brother. But it seems that the assailants targeted the men because they were walking with their arms around each other.

well, you all know that showing any affection towards another man immediately makes you a limp-wristed, fey, @$$phuquing, showtune-singing homo.

    so effin sad.

This is a good point, and it is also why hate crime legislation usually include the notion of being "perceived" gay -- that is the victim does not actually have to be gay for it to be a hate crime.

Also though it shows that these crimes are crimes of irrationality and ignorance. It exposes much of the mind of the perpetrators. It should be apparent that homophobia is ignorance.

As far as why these things go unnoticed in so many cases, this has always been a problem. I don't think most people really have a grasp of how often things like this happen. A lot of other hate crimes are pretty much recorded as a matter of law across all states, but hate crimes against sexual orientation is only recorded by mandate in about half the states. Even so considering the rather small population of (out) gays, there is plenty of violence against [perceived] gays.

Older gays can tell stories of times when persecution of gays was much more overt by even the police. My ex said when he was young and these stories were reported to the police that they disappeared into the "Q file". I just watched Milk with my ex who was out in the 70's and as early as when he was 15. He said when he was a young gay man, gays were more "mixed" (by age, race etc) and that they would hear stories from previous generations of gay men. He put forth the idea that with the AIDS epidemic that a whole generation of gay men were wiped out. This he said along with the way that gay people tend to segregate themselves these days, there is a gap in knowledge and concern about our past. It is a sad thing when people are persecuted even to the point of death and no one takes notice.

Gay people should be more aware of the history of gays rights and a history of gays if the want to improve their lives and the lives of other gays.

BTW as I am typing this, this story is now showing up on CNN.
