Are Trolls Good or Bad for a site like RJ?

Everyone claims to hate trolls: those who start fights and derail threads.
Yet trolls always seem to be well fed. They may only get negative attention but they get plenty of it.

Here's my question: Do trolls negatively affect your experience of this site or do they make it more entertaining?

ikilledcaptainplanet saidhonestly, i think many people on this site don't know what a TROLL or what TROLLING is and misuse the word for agendas that they have instead of being correct.

Funny how the first response to this thread was from Pazzy, a troll.

I don't see them affecting my time on here because i usually fight back and put them in their place. I am used to being trolled here since day one but i don't like the ones that "TRY" to disrespect me keyword there.

Because i shut most of them down every time they attempt to come for me like the one that's been pressed because i got his thread deleted last night.

Some of them are funny though

    Trolls are cyber monkey wrenches.
They're not destroying the group but, worse, stopping it from becoming what it can be.
People barely know how on make conversation here because most treads quickly descend into the same imagination-free banter and end with the stale old "seek therapy."

People who generate banter are great
Forums without provocateurs are boring spewers of groupthink, where imagination is not tolerated
People who are just rude or rehearse the same arguments (one in particular) drag the forum down.

Trolls are like guys at a pool party who piss in the pool: once you get too many (or an ugly one) no one wants to swim any more.

After a while you just stop visiting.

Except the op asked about trolls: "people who start fights and derail threads."
I think no line here objects to healthy controversy.

I've seen many interesting threads start out, looking like we were really going
to communicate some new ideas or learn something from each other and then it happens.
A nastier member jumps in to either derail the conversation or declare the thread idiotic in such angry terms that people are wary about posting.
The handful of members who love drama are taking advantage of the forum and too often lead us into showing ourselves in our worst light.
And then we wonder why we can't connect with anyone here.
I fear we've been conditioned to come here for the sensation of the drama and never bother to put an effort into finding out why thousands of horny and lonely men can't come here and find someone.

I think there should be an immediate and irrevocable ban for anyone who starts a thread that's not a Guy Above You thread.

Pazzy isn't a troll. He's an incredibly angry, Ebonics speaking, wannabe thug who speaks his mind without thinking. But he's not a troll. icon_biggrin.gif

I don't disagree, but I think he's gotten better over the last six months or so. I think he'll be OK.

Trolls suck the life out of a web site.
