Do you leave your TV on when you're not watching some program? For background noise, or too keep an ear/eye on what's going on?

Long ago I had a roommate that liked to do that; the TV was always on except when he was not there or he was asleep.

My first boyfriend would like to do that.

I imagine it's just a habit learned growing up.

It's comforting to him. He liked having M*A*S*H on in the background. It reminded him of the safety of his family. Or, the imagined safety, haha.

I turn it off because it's just too distracting. Also, I grew up where it would only be on if something was being watched.

Personally I cannot study or exist in complete silence. I don't know if its my ADHD or the fear of being alone with my imagination and its never ending downward spiral of thinking, but my Tv is always on. Mostly movies that are good background noise like the LOTR's trilogy.

Roomie runs the TV in the room where we both have computers. He has the volume set just under where it is comfortable to know what is being said. It is irritating as hell! I am on a campaign to get him to use earphones so that I do not have to pay attention to the drivel that is on.

Why not get a white noise generator? They take far less power to operate.

I agree. We just recently got TV as part of a cost saving deal with phone an internet. Have not had it for years and years. There is almost nothing that I am interested in. Just had to endure some thing with Guidos building garish fish tanks. AAARRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

I don`t own one these days, but in the past, no, if I wasn`t actively watching a programme, I`d turn it off. I find so much television these days poor quality, is almost an assault on your senses, and too declamatory. Like the computer/internet, it`s too stimulatory.

I can`t sleep except in near silence. Natural sounds like rain or wind are okay but nothing man made.

I would leave a radio on as background during the day, but very quietly, and only music, no talk.

I think it`s maybe because we never had a television until I was thirteen-by which time I had settled on books and radio, etc. as my entertainment-so it`s not that special to me. Also I was raised and live in very quiet countryside, so I notice even small amounts of noise.

Ugh, no. I once had a long unhappy battle with apartment neighbors who left theirs on 24/7 - directly on the other side of the wall from my bed. Then they cranked up the volume to max and went away on vacation. Apartment manager wouldn't do anything about it. Cops wouldn't do anything about it. I just had to move out. Damn. Getting upset just thinking about it.

MuchMoreThanMuscle saidI only have a television to watch movies. I don't think it's very good to keep the television on when you're not focused on what you're watching. I have read that this can also negatively impact your subconscious self. Although I can't prove it I do believe it. I'll usually just play classical music or something relaxing on the radio as background noise. What I hate listening to are all the commercials during television programs, even if it's in the background. It's also really annoying to me that the volume goes up substantially every time a commercial comes on. I think this happens because it is believed that most people get up and go to the kitchen or step away from the television in order to do something before the program comes back on. So the volume jacks up to keep your attention . I don't know if anyone else notices this.

The upping of the volume on advertisements relative to the programmes on commercial channels here is one of the reasons I gave up my television. I did read that the companies measure sound electronically/mechanically, but the human ear perceives it differently ie louder for a set volume, so it`s all legal, unfortunately.

MuchMoreThanMuscle saidI would also like to add that having a large screen TV is a lot of fun to watch porn. On a forty inch screen the actors appear bigger than life. icon_twisted.gif All I can say is this is a lot better than watching the same thing on a laptop.

Try a 60", lol. I can almost smell taint. icon_lol.gif

    So Smell-O-Vision isn't just a rumor? icon_eek.gif

I am on netflix and crunchyroll... A LOT. I tend to watch a lot of movies. For example, I watched the movie Stargate three times this week (I love that movie). I typically am half tuned to the tv and half focused on something else. It's not just TV though. I will play music as well. I cannot focus on just one thing, my mind wanders and wonders so I need something to "tether" it, for lack if a better word. I have only had one guy who was annoyed by the TV. But he was particularly about so many things that was the least of my worries...

You could go ahead with your killing spree plans and simply blame the multiple voices you here in your head.

    Might that be an option?

    No!!!

It's a pet peeve of mine (similarity to that of unnecessarily leaving lights on for an extended time). I feel that it is extremely wasteful, especially in the era of sleep timers. You wouldn't leave the bathroom sink running for white noise, would you!? Lol.

YourName2000 saidYup. Lots of programs only need to be listened to to be followed, so can get other stuff done. When I'm at home on RJ, the TV is usually on.
Boo, your TV is NEVER off.

Is that why you were able to sleep through your neighbor's construction?

I can only sleep with white noise myself.
