some of these meso-american cultures were completely obsessed with eschatology... i've read that this is what fueled their advances in mathematics, archetecture and astonomy. regardless of what WE believe, it was so real to them that their cultures self-imploded because of it. although they got the date wrong, it was a self-fulfilling prophecy for them, n'est-ce pas?

Um, how can history show a "surprisingly good track record" for those oracles who make predictions for doomsday? How many times has the world ended and they have been right?

Also, the world better not end, I get my PhD that year!!!! Come on, I have been dying to be Dr. Dan ever since I was a kid icon_sad.gif

I just got off the phone with Quetzalcoatl, he says it's gonna be postponed. He has a headache and the doctor says to put the lime in the coconut and drink it all up and rest for 3 more millenia.

The Tzitzimime sisters are out shopping anyway. They won't be back until 2523 at least. And the Chihuateo are too lazy to do anything when their mistresses are away. They're the ones supposed to drag the sun down and do the mayhem and destruction on 2012. But y'know... women. icon_rolleyes.gif

Yes, I believe that 2012 will be the end of the world. But we can prevent it by stopping Sarah Palin from running for US President.

JETSETTER9 saidThis is bs according to the book of revelation the world will flourish, there will be disaster, calamities & dead but world will not end. How many people predicted the the world will end but it never happen only God knows.

Yeah I talked to God too. He says the Second Angel lost his phial of blood and is really pissed about it. The Beast got into an argument with one of its heads and is now not talking to itself and sulking in the corner. The mount of the Third Horseman also got eaten by the Red Dragon. He ventured too near the dragon stables, I guess. God's mad with his planning committee. He says he's gonna scrap the Revelation party and convert to Scientology. At least the Aliens make good coffee.

As I recall, the world has ended several times during my life and we have yet to be the better for it happening.

I am going to take the firm stance that yes, I absolutely do believe that 2012 will happen.

Just as I believe that 2013, 2014, 3076, and 87064 will also happen.

As a Jew, I believe that the world has a long way to go before the end. Tikkun Olam (Repairing the World). This means all the world's Jewery must assemble in Israel (doubt a mass migration in 4 years) and world peace....Wishful thinking eh?

I'm a big fan of arbitrary dates so, yes, I do believe the world will end in 2012. Which totally sucks, because 2013 is the year my astrologer told me I would be winning the lottery.

Aren't these the same Mayans that believed the world began some 5000 years ago, and also sacrificed people to 'hungry' gods?

....methinks we'll be up tonight surfing and researching this a little...

If the Mayans were so good at prophecy, why didn't they foresee the arrival of the Spanish?

That's the thing, Mike - they rather thought they had.

Listen, my Dad has been predicting his imminent departure from this earth since 1989. Recently he's stopped saying, "I won't be around much longer." I think He figured God was fucking with him for trying to call it himself ...

    Oh but they did!

Would that he might return (to) the west, uniting with us in commiseration over our present unhappy plight! This is the fulfillment of the prophecies of Katun 5 Ahau: the pottery jars shall be shattered into dust, when Run 19 arrives! At that time there will be imprisonment among the lords, when the prophecies have come true. There will be vigils in the overburdened katun. So be it.

I definitely don't think the world will end in 2012, though we definitely have the technology to blow ouselves sky high, so hopefully some nutjob feeling the need to fulfill the prophecy him or herself won't have access to The Button. Some people I've spoken with on this wonder if it will be the end of the world as we know it, but then some new system of existence will come out on the other side. Perhaps 2012 will have us in economic or ecological collapse, in which case we would have to GREATLY alter our ways of living.

Or maybe 2012 will mark some significant shift in global consciousness. (*chews thoughtfully on granola bar*) Many an author has written of humankind's impending shift to the next level of existence, since we are nearing the end of our "teenage" phase, where we have been distancing ourselves from Mom (Nature) and looking up to Dad (God/religion) and also have been incredibly self-absorbed.

Phase before that, we honored the mother and felt incredibly dependent upon her and connected (spirituality with strong female dieties reflected this), i.e. ice age, nomadic and tribal days before industrialization shifted us into the 2nd phase that we are now ending. Maybe the information age is the catalyst for us to shift into something more stable and conscientious and will give us better understanding of just how destructive or constructive we as a species can be? That would be the end of the world as we know it...into something unknown but hopefully much more balanced. Just an idea. icon_smile.gif
