Study: Conservative Republican policies lead to MORE divorce... Why red states have highest divorce rates

This is great to remember the next time you hear a Republican bigot who is against marriage equality, claiming to be "protecting traditional marriage." It turns out their conservative policies are harming marriage and increasing divorce rates.

It may seem counterintuitive, but divorce rates are higher in religiously conservative "red" states than "blue" states, despite a Bible-based culture that discourages divorce.

In a new study titled "Red States, Blue States, and Divorce: Understanding the Impact of Conservative Protestantism on Regional Variation in Divorce Rates," which will be published later this month in the American Journal of Sociology, demographer and University of Texas at Austin professor Jennifer Glass set out to discover why divorce rates are so much higher in religious states like Arkansas and Alabama -- which boast the second and third highest divorce rates, respectively -- and much lower in more liberal states like New Jersey and Massachusetts.

It was previously thought that socioeconomic hardships in the South were largely to blame for high divorce rates, however Glass and her fellow researchers concluded that the conservative religious culture is in fact a major contributing factor thanks to "the social institutions they create" that "decrease marital stability."

Specifically, putting pressure on young people to marry sooner, frowning upon cohabitation before marriage, teaching abstinence-only sex education and making access to resources like emergency contraception more difficult all result in earlier childbearing ages and less-solid marriages from the get-go, Glass writes in the paper.

Amazing how a Leftist thinks that people's choice to get divorced is because of policies of a government. You are rather unhinged in your hatred for non-Left ideology.

This shit is real obvious, thus I'd written earlier today in a different thread http://www.realjock.com/gayforums/3642393?forumpage=1 that...

As to str8s not sexually defining themselves, that's not only their problem, but might even be related to their very high divorce rate. One of the wonderful things about being gay has been our freedom to explore ourselves sexually because within each orientation there are a multitude of preferences, the reality of which has long been denied the str8 community.

So what might look overly sexual on our part is really a benefit. How many str8 partners have wound up in basically rape situations, performing sexual acts which they might abhor just to maintain their marriage? Since they likely don't have our sexual experience to have had the opportunity to know themselves before coupling, I would imagine that number quite high.

I feel badly for them. I think it horrible that they go into marriages without even knowing what fits where. That we endeavor to know ourselves is not a negative. It is the height of being human. Some might call that a source of pride.

Interesting study, but not particularly counter-intuitive. Early marriage is the giveaway.

It reminds me of how the UK has generally higher rates of family breakdown than western Europe despite a more sexually conservative culture.

It`s almost as if the more politicians go on about the virtue of family life, the more it collapses around them; that the two are obscurely linked.

    YES, I agree.
This study supports my belief that Republicans do not give two sh*ts about "protecting marriage."
If they did, they would focus on establishing a living wage, creating more jobs, and helping people get health care. Instead, they are doing the exact opposite.

"Protecting Marriage" is a smoke screen for oppressing gay Americans and keeping them from being treated equally.

It is a known fact that these right wing lunatics that are defending traditional marriage are the ones with the broken homes and troubled lives. They preach against the skyrocketing divorce rates and gay marriage but they never look at their own backyards where getting married and divorced repeatedly is very common. Yet they will lecture the rest of American society about the evils of divorce and gay marriage. What hypocritesicon_mad.gif
